I wish Sewanee would’ve stayed. It’s beautiful there.

Yes, I know that.

But the Atlanta metro dwarfs the Charlotte metro. Atlanta is the 7th largest city in the country w/the metro area added.

Great read. Thanks for sharing it
If there is one thing I've learned in my career it's that intellectuals rarely make good decisions. I've seen a lot of great companies here in Dallas hit the shitter because they promoted their best tech guy to be the leader.

So are we talking about the city of Atlanta or are we now bringing in all the surrounding counties that want nothing to do with the city of Atlanta.

You and the other guy should argue if the actual city of Atlanta is just a town and not a city.

GT would've been no better than Vanderbilt had they stayed. Conference affiliation has little to do with their woes. They're a school that thinks language courses should have a math angle.

The reality is, their departure from the SEC was more of a symptom than a disease.

Leaving the SEC hurt, bad, but it was their arrogance and lack of investment over the long haul that sent them on the decline.

And it was that same arrogance and lack of investment that led to them leaving the SEC.

When we are talking about a city's size, metro areas are always added in.

Who cares if they want nothing to do w/the city of Atlanta? That's a red herring.

Also, he was dumb for calling Charlotte a "town". That's just idiotic.

Atlanta is the economic driver of your state. So much of what has helped Georgia grow beyond being yet another poor, rural backwater state is due to Atlanta pushing forward from its past.

I've always wondered how much of GT leaving the conference was actually due to the bad blood between Dodd and Bryant over the Darwin Holt hit against Chick Graning back in '61. Holt really messed the guys face up and historically it is probably the second most infamous hit in CFB by hind the Johnny Bright hit by Oklahoma A&M's Wilbanks Smith ten years earlier.
those are 2nd and 3rd most infamous now

And they still have the 3rd best-winning % in the league.

No one cares about this cupcake game. Except UGA and my father who still hates them more than AU

I love how suburbia loves to shite on the city that was the reason they became what they are. Of course, those burbs are just going to become what they claim to hate soon enough, and then you will keep trying to flee to some promised land that doesn’t exist. I wonder how many peeps on here talking about “good neighbors” realize they are likely the neighbor that does absolutely nothing that helps their local community and only interactions with their neighbors occurs through the HOA.

We obviously feel very different about the city of Atlanta and neither of us are going to change our mind about that.

No point and continuing to go round and round. Happy Thanksgiving and Go Dawgs.

Atlanta is now and has been since reconstruction the economic engine of the south.

Ironically enough, it took Bobby Dodd six years to graduate high school.

Charlotte is about 75% larger than Atlanta but metro Charlotte is about 40% the size of Atlanta. That’s the difference between a city and a town. People live IN a town ( Charlotte) while people live AROUND a city ( Atlanta). The city limits of Atlanta is mostly places of business while Charlotte is neighborhoods. People do not live in offices and hospitals and industrial parks. They live near them. Charlotte is a town, Atlanta is a city.

Last time I was in ATL I was almost murdered. The police just sat around and laughed. That would never happen in NOLA. Sad!

There was also discussion about Tech not traveling much when in the SEC because traveling to Atlanta was more logistically easy than traveling to Knoxville for example. I can’t imagine other schools tolerating that but there seems to be some validity to it. Anyone know for certain?

There is some truth to that. GT was Auburn's second opponent and GT is the closest school to Auburn, so there was a natural rivalry, particularly during the 40 years Auburn and bama did not play each other.

In those days, the team and fans would charter a train and ride to the game en masse, but after the second train incident, GT refused to come to Auburn until the 70s. Auburn played it's "home" games with GT in Birmingham or Atlanta. Before interstates, Auburn was pretty hard to get too and there were few hotels and other facilities to handle crowds.

In my FiL's day for instance, Auburn only played a couple of true home games in Auburn. He said they enjoyed hopping on the train and going to the Atlanta.

The South would be nothing but a stain without Atlanta.
