Coming up on 60 years since GT pussied out of the SEC

quote:
“It was a horrible decision,” said Mitchell Ginn, a Tech graduate in architecture and a Newnan residential designer who doubles as a historian.
quote:
At the crux of Tech’s exit was the so-called 140 Rule. SEC schools — there were 12, Tulane included — were allowed 140 scholarships for football and men’s basketball; football programs were allowed to sign as many 45 recruits per season. Tech coach Bobby Dodd believed that other teams were overrecruiting, pushing aside underperforming players to clear scholarship space for newer ones.
quote:
That summer, The Atlanta Constitution ran a story proclaiming that Tech was prepared to leave the SEC over the 140 Rule. The 1964 meetings convened at the downtown Atlanta Americana Motor Hotel, with some believing that the Jackets had delivered an ultimatum: Change the rule or we’re out.
quote:
After two days of wrangling and failed compromises, Harrison opened the Friday presidents’ meeting by saying, “Georgia Tech’s interests would best be served by withdrawing from the conference.” As Ginn noted in his article, the official vote had not yet been taken. When it was, the count was 11-0 to keep the 140 Rule.
Let’s see how that worked out for them…
quote:
Wrote Ginn: “The years that followed as an independent were mostly lean ones. From 1964 to 1982, Georgia Tech’s football record was 104-100-5. Compare that to Tech’s … record of 206-110-12 from 1933 to 1963. As an independent, Georgia Tech saw its facilities become worn and outdated, surpassed in size and quality by most of its Southern competitors.”
quote:
One consequence of Tech’s SEC exit that Curry will concede involves Atlanta itself. He grew up in College Park rooting for the Bulldogs, his father having been a Georgia graduate. In Curry’s mind, the city was split almost 50-50 between Jackets and Bulldogs in the early ’60s, but this remained an SEC town even without an SEC team. By leaving the conference, Tech ceded Atlanta to Georgia. Wrote Ginn: “Arguably, the level of national prestige that Tech football enjoyed as a member in the SEC has never returned. … In 1963, the enrollment at Georgia Tech was about 6,300 students, and there were roughly 50,000 living alumni. In 2011, the enrollment at Georgia Tech (was) more than 20,000, and there (were) more than 120,000 living alumni. Atlanta’s metro population more than tripled. Yet Georgia Tech’s average football attendance for 2010 was less than in 1963.”
Just remember, Georgia Tech has nobody to blame for their decades of ineptitude but their own elitist, self-righteous selves.
frick tech.

georgia tech is the dumbest 'smart' school in the history of the planet. This is just one of many examples. Idiots.

Clean old fashioned irrelevance

You want a shithole, go to NOLA

It absolutely is, comparing it to a 3rd world country like NOLA and saying the ATL isn’t a shithole is silly.

Yeah, pointing out a worse shithole doesn’t preclude Atlanta from also being a shithole.
Which it is.

I've always wondered how much of GT leaving the conference was actually due to the bad blood between Dodd and Bryant over the Darwin Holt hit against Chick Graning back in '61.
Holt really messed the guys face up and historically it is probably the second most infamous hit in CFB by hind the Johnny Bright hit by Oklahoma A&M's Wilbanks Smith ten years earlier.
That feud festered until Ga Tech left the conference.

Atlanta isn't a shithole. Are there bad areas? Absolutely. But there are a lot more viable and appeasing neighborhoods than you think. East Atlanta Village, Grant Park, Kirkwood, Ansley Park, West Midtown (where my sister lives), and yes, now Summerhill. You can actually walk in a lot of places in Atlanta w/o fear of being shot or mugged in broad daylight.
The population of Atlanta proper has gentrified greatly the last 20 years and it has gained population, unlike NOLA which is and has been hemorrhaging population.
Sorry to burst your narrative.

Atlanta ain't a shithole. It's nowhere close.
NOLA, Baton Rouge, Philly, Gary Indiana, those are shitholes.

I never knew this.
Thanks.
But Dodd was still a pretentious snob.

I don’t know what type of fairyland you live him but these aren’t particularly safe places. Also being safe isn’t everything. They people that live in these area are not people worth living around for the most part.

You do know most of those neighborhoods that I listed are majority white, right?
If that's what you're getting at.
And my sister and BIL have lived in the city for a decade, (W.Midtown and Old Fourth Ward) and she has never had any issues.

It was definitely the precursor to the saga I just mentioned. Really, Dodd took his ball and went home because of his personal feud with Bear Bryant.
Which is absolutely ridiculous. Dodd did more for Tech than anybody ever, but he simultaneously doomed them by not being able to put his pride aside to act in the best long-term interest of his institution.

Not one single TECH grad (including past football players) I know gives a single flying frick about the SEC. They all care about how they are going to generate their next millions and buy their next beach house.
