There is no reason not to pay the players. Well there is one big main reason not to, and that is greed. For this to be America, where capitalism reins supreme, one would think that a industry which makes billions of dollars would pay the people who brings in most of that money (student athletes) instead of bartering with them in giving them a free education and room/board?

This is America, and capitalism reigns supreme, but if you say that the corporate CEOs, Presidents, and other executive billionaires and millionaires should divvy up that loot to the common working class, because if it wasn't for that working class working in the factories making the products that made those executives into billionaires and millionaires, then they'd be nobodies, then people would start running you down with their cars. The Republicans will start pointing their fingers at you and give you the stink-eye.

Those working class employees make enough to buy a home, put food on the table for their children, and retire with a nice pension. As long as they do it for 30-40 years. These student-athletes are given a quality education for free, to build their future careers on. They are getting more in 4 years what the American working class gets in the same timeframe. That is how America works.....

The bubble will eventually burst on all of this.

In the meantime we have to let capitalism take its course and allow coaches to make what the market will bear.

Paying players is a slippery slope. Bidding wars will ensue.

Conference TV money allows the lesser P5 schools to play fast and loose with the money. A lot of money well spent is worth it, even a little money poorly spent is not. Truth is that I is setting the P5 schools farther and farther away from even the top flight G5 schools. They need to be in completely different leagues with their own postseason.

UCF goes undefeated and wins a NY6 bowl, the next day they don’t have a coaching staff. That tells you everything g about being a G5 school.

Eh, I dunno. Scott Frost went to his Alma Mater. I think he would've left a majority of P5 schools to go for the Nebraska job.

About 18000 football players.

What?65 P5 schools with 85 FB scholarships...comes to about 5500.

No idea where you're getting your numbers from.If you take into account all P5 scholarship athletes the number comes to about 16,500 give or take...estimated
at about 250 scholarships per school.

It would seem that the simplest solution is to figure out a way to allow for likeness rights to generate income for the athletes (something similar to the Olympic model, though I know many oppose this... I'm not sure the specific reasons why)... whether that's limited total income derived from signatures and public appearances during the offseason, or something to that effect. I see no reason why the income needs to come directly from the school, but I don't think that it's an unfair ask for players who command attention to be able to generate some form of income.

College football players already get paid. Unfortunately for them they essentially have a tax rate of like 95% and their wealth is redistributed to people who would otherwise have to pay for their own education or skip college altogether.

I can't help stupid. I had a link from the ncaa.

You are doing estimates. I am doing numbers direct from ncaa on division 1 and 2 football (remember that link i provided from the ncaa?) Our numbers should be different. Mine are fact. Yours are estimates. Mine are ncaa. Yours are p5.

If you step away from your emotional keyboard and use your brain, you wouldn't be so confused.

The players should get paid something but they already get free school, books, tutors,etc....As soon as players get paid you can bet all the non revenue generating sports will be gone. Schools would have to pay women's basketball, softball, volleyball,etc...too and there's no way they can when they lose money on those sports already. That's why you never hear politicians supporting the idea of paying CFB and basketball players. Women's sports would be gone overnight at every college. Look at the NBA they've been supporting the WNBA for years because it loses money.

Players are now getting paid. They get cost of attending stipend checks on top of housing checks (if they live off campus). Add in grants and student loans, and these kids can afford the expensive cars that they are driving (the car is the only expense with all if that money). They are living better than 1/2 of the population with disposable funds.

STFU.

They get a degree, room & board, tutors, etc... no student debt when they get out of school, etc...

A degree helps them earn a living for 40-50+ years. Stop with the players don’t get anything for playing ball. If they don’t take advantage of the situation and get their degree... that is on them.

Won't happen. The coaches pay taxes on that income, do players want to pay taxes on that income + cost of living stipend?

Forget about taxes. Just make them pay tuition, room, and board.

Paid employees should be ineligibile for all scholarships.

They get free tuition, but it is renewable each year. You people keep implying it’s a free education. A degree is NOT assured, even if you get good grades and do everything right. Then you have an entire industry that has been created to keep non-college IQ level ‘students’ eligible. Then they leave there after 4 or 5 years with bullshite. That shows you the “value”of these players to the University.
Getting health care for debilitating injuries after you are done is also not a given. Think of the disability claims schools would be on the line for if they actually took ownership of them.

Wrong. Football players and basketball players add a value the regular student couldn't dream of. The cost of attendance is set by the college and the "education" athletes get is pathetic. UNC and FSU say hello. Let's pay you far below your market value for your skill set and restrict your career options and see how you like it.

College Athletes Getting Paid? Here Are Some Pros And Cons

03/29/2017 10:06 am ET Updated Mar 29, 2017

?

SOURCE: YOUTHVOICES.NET

During this year’s NCAA tournament, there has been obvious speculation about college athletes and the significant amount of revenue they have been bringing to their schools and the NCAA. This isn’t something new. This is something that has been a growing issue in recent years. Not just a regular issue at that, but a structurally racial issue on many levels. African Americans make up the majority of college athletes at the top levels in three major sports: men’s and women’s basketball (Division I) and the upper FBS level of the NCAA’s Division I, according to Travis Walton’s HuffPost article “Black Americans Support Paying College Athletes. White People? Not So Much.” These also happen to be the highest revenue-generating sports in college athletics.

Race isn’t the only issue, but statistically it plays a huge part in the reason why many people oppose the fact that college athletes should be getting paid. According to the same article, “A majority ? 52% ? of black respondents are strongly or somewhat in favor of paying college athletes, while only 15% strongly or somewhat oppose the idea. Among whites, however, the numbers flip: Just 27% support paying those athletes, while 43% oppose it.”

Most regular students can start companies or make money off their name. If they offered enough value they'd get paid for it. Hell zuckerberg started FB in college. The UCF kicker, Gurley, Manziel all made money off their names and faced penalties for it. It's hilarious watching conservative spin socialism as a good thing while hating the free marketplace when it comes to CFB and CBB. The mental gymnastics is astonishing.

Not only that look at all the classes missed from these games. Plus the players work 43 hours just on their sport on average.

I agree. We should also demand all the corporations and non-profits around the world pay a living wage. Everybody should get free steak dinners, free tutors for college, access to weight room, a personal trainer, a pool, health insurance, a team doctor, a place to live, and a 5000 dollar stipend a semester, and financial advice upon graduation.
