Players deserve no cash. They get room and board, education, and supplies.
Let's take a visit to bizzaro world though and imagine how that would go....
That out of state 20-30k per year tuition scholarship, taxable income. Books? Tax that. Dorm/apartment stipend? Tax that too.
So the kids would actually owe more than they're receiving in cash most likely just to pay the government for all forms of income received via scholarship.
Doesn't Louisiana also have a state income tax? Yikes.

Just for being born athletic, they get a lot more than the rest of us.

No doubt the salaries are ridiculous but don't think
a salary cap would hold up in court.Maybe states could
cap their part of a coaches compensation but controlling other revenue streams would be a challenge.
I think there needs to be a cap on "administrator assts"...pretty sure thats that's very doable.

I think most folks would favor a form of compensation over and above the scholarship.
Their room and board stipend is already taxed BTW.

Scholarship money (tuition and books) is non taxable
So it would be virtually impossible to "owe more" than
they recieve.
P5 teams should'nt recieve 1 dime in federal tax subsidies in the way of Pell Grants for players.ALL those funds need to reimnursed to the feds.

If they are employees, then it becomes an imputed income. It isn't a scholarship at that point. It is an employee compensation.
The exception would be if the education provided by the employer would advance the employee's career. That would railroad the athletes into a Physical Education degree to avoid having to pay income tax on an imputed benefit (i.e. pay taxes on a benefit that never reaches their wallet).

There are 150,000 scholarship athletes in this country, and you are expecting at least 75,001 to value money in their pocket more than their scholarship?
You are insane.

Read again...compensation ABOVE what their scholarship prvides.Certainly not equal to or even close.
No more then 15 to 20k and the IMMEDIATE elimination of all Pell Grants.
P5 ONLY BTW and your 150,000 scholorship number is laughable

So why are they taxed on room and board?
They can also increase the COA stipend as opposed to going the employee route. It was a screwey "formula"
anyway.

Closer to about 17,000 in regards to P5 schools.

Seeing how I'm going to have 2 in college at the same time, I think the players are getting a mighty fine compensation.

Per the ncaa, there are 400,000+ student athletes in the country. 150,000 of them receive athletic scholarships.

Add up all the free perks, services, and scholarships they get. Trainer and coaching time. Medical. Insurance. Housing. Etc. That's how much they get paid.

About 18000 football players.
But title ix forces this discussion to spread further than football.

Paying college players is a dumb concept. You might have 4-5 kids on every team who actually "earn" what they might be paid, the other 100 could be replaced by some other kid in the blink of an eye. They get free everything plus medical care, stipend, and other intangibles. They're making a lot to not play at a professional level.

The players should get paid something but they already get free school, books, tutors,etc....As soon as players get paid you can bet all the non revenue generating sports will be gone. Schools would have to pay women's basketball, softball, volleyball,etc...too and there's no way they can when they lose money on those sports already. That's why you never hear politicians supporting the idea of paying CFB and basketball players. Women's sports would be gone overnight at every college. Look at the NBA they've been supporting the WNBA for years because it loses money.

Think this through
How many schools pay coaches that much, How many athletic departments are even in the green, you think they’d only end up having to pay football players?
Also check out how much big time highschool football rakes in. Those kids could have jobs instead of working for free. At what point is it not playing a game you love? The NFL, that’s where
The vast majority of college football can’t afford to pay players and pay for every non profit amateur sport football supports. Why not just make it a 32 team D1? Oh wait...
When does Leonard Fournette complain he’s making the same as the backup kicker while he’s the only one risking a future career.... then when do kids want the ball just for the bigger bucks once that’s ruled on...
The NCAA doesn’t say kids have to play NCAA football. The NFL says they won’t take them until 3 yrs removed from highschool. There is no fanfare in minor league football without the school affiliation, they can play in Canada for 60-100k a year until the nfl will take them I think. NCAA isn’t stopping them

If Florida is going to pay 6+ for Mullen then Auburn got fair market. Blame Merlins for the hike this year and Saban somewhat.

The kids should just stop playing football. Make it where the quality and depth of players gets so abysmal that the fans will blow their tops without being able to watch 19 year old kids get their brains bashed in that the schools have to pay the players if they want the sport to survive.
The fans will want football.
Kids will want to play again with the added benefit of money.
The schools can start bringing in millions again.
Football would suck for 5-10 years and possibly die out, but if it survived it would be a win win.
