Remember he signed 40 recruits in one class full of academic risks and joked about it?

If I remember it was so bad that the SEC had to limit how many players you could sign.

It was time for Les Miles to leave in 2014 and certainly in 2015. When he came back in 2016 I pretty much hated him. Now I wish he was still around and a part of the area. He was a good coach who had a ton of success here and was, if nothing else, very entertaining.

I can't say it wasn't so bad after all. But Sylvester Croom came to State having been in the pros for 20 years. Never coached college, never been a head coach but he is a nice guy. He came to State with no high school recruiting network and probably made some buddy hires as assistants. He always stressed running the "west coast offense" but never recruited "west coast offense" like players. But again, he is a really nice guy.

Les Miles to an extent.

He was like the George W Bush of coaches.

He was always good, but he was never going to maximize what you could be because he simply didn’t have that in him.

QB evals, offensive system and in game calls were never going to improve, he just was who he was.

But let’s be clear, his biggest issue was he had the historical misfortune of constantly being compared to the coach he had replaced and that was now at a competitor school standing between him and championships while setting records.

Think about Les Miles if Nick Saban era Bama doesn’t happen… I think he would basically be Dabo Swinney.

The SEC was so much more fun when it had characters at the HC position. The HBC, the Hatter, Holtz, the Rev Nutt. Petrino's inveterate a-hole nature was good for a laugh. Hell, Nick in his perpetual curmudgeon mode at press conferences was entertaining.

Now, the conference's coaching ranks has all the charm and charisma of a PGA Tour leaderboard.

Spurrier. Just hated him in the day, but respect him now. The man was not just the Gator's coach, he was a Gator.

Not sure a coach has ever mailed it in as much as Houston did for the 2nd half of his Ole Miss tenure

Biggest mistake ever was letting him finish his last season after telling him he would no longer be the coach. I knew kids on the team at that time. They said they hardly practiced the remaining part of the season after the staff was told they would not be returning.

Hated but seems okay now?

Well, in my lifetime, Alabama has had:

Bryant - loved then, still loved

Perkins - Meh

Curry - A lot of fans hated his inability to beat Auburn, but I didn't hate him.

Stallings - Loved then and now.

DuBose - Hated. Don't "hate" now, but definitely not looked upon fondly either

Francione - Hated then, laughed about now.

Shula - Never "hated" him, just knew he wasn't the right guy long term but was the right guy at the time. Hope he took that money and invested it wisely.

Saban - Loved then, loved now.

DeBoer - Jury's out, but no "hate"

So... no?

Saban of course.

After suffering through 4 miserable years of Matt McMahon basketball, I have a little more respect for Johnny Jones’ tenure at LSU. He completely botched the NCAAT game against NC State and the Ben Simmons season, but he signed multiple future NBA players at LSU and won 20 games with a former tuba player in the Tiger Band starting at center. It’s hilarious that he is also back at LSU along with tPear.

Like a revisionist "Well he wasn't so bad after all"

Zook. He was that bad after all, but comparatively his awful seasons were better than the ones that saved Napier's job after 2024.

And he was a hell of a recruiter, built much of the team that won 2006 and a chunk of 2008 titles.

Spurrier as he made the 90s miserable for LSU but once he went to USC and retired I enjoyed listening to him speak. I never hated Nick. Sucked having to go against him all those years at Bama but it was a lot easier to listen to him once he did retire as whatever bias there may have been was gone. If I had to guess its because these guys are "real" like what they have to say or not they are true to their words on things. I don't think ill ever feel differently of someone like Dabo as he just comes off as fake.

Not fired, but Mullen was pretty dang good at Miss State. He had it good there and shouldn’t have gone back to Florida.

Also always liked Richt, seemed like a chill dude.
