I am a pretty old, so I remember some of the powerful teams and how they dominated particular eras. But, Penn State has 2 National Championships and FSU has three. Both were dominant for long stretches of time, and one could argue that FSU has been more relevant more recently than Penn State.

The media tends to give more credit for the older powers and vote them higher in pre-season polls and keep them higher longer after losses. See: USCw, Penn State, ND, Texas, Alabama (although I could argue Alabama deserves it to this point) FSU, Ohio State, Michigan and several others.

Nebraska and Texas are in Tier 1: The OG Bluebloods

Georgia through Auburn is Tier 2: The New Bloods

Pitt might slip into Tier 2...

No integration until 1969 for the Crimson Tide. Number 1 is not only amazing but dam close to a miracle.

Funny thing is they might be right. Being in the Big 7/8 is the only reason that OU was able to integrate the team in 1956 instead of 1970. The fact that OU got a head start on integrating their program... and that was a huge part of why they were so good in the 1970s.

The concept of a blue blood is subjective. Tiers are subjective too, they're divisions based on someone's preferred criteria. In this case the tiers seem to be based on 15 point ranges. 100 to 85, 85 to 70, 70 to 55, etc. The bottom tier of the top 40 (also a subjective range) seems to have been extended to avoid putting Oregon State in a tier by itself.

Seems pretty arbitrary to count 1998-2013 as less than a pre bcs title
