AJ McCarron also sat and waited his turn. He redshirted in 2009, was the back-up to Greg McElroy in 2010, before having to win the job in a competition against highly recruited Phillip Sims in 2011. He went on to win back-to-back national championships and finished runner-up in the Heisman voting in 2013. I believe he is the only QB in SEC history to win back-to-back national titles as the full-time starter.

The season Blake Sims had still blows my mind. Watching him in the spring game, he couldn't complete a pass.
Kiffin did a phenomenal job with both him and Coker

Burrow is a Yes and No?
I think OP meant at this original school. So he didn't get the playing time he wanted but eventually got his shot and made it count.
Matt Flynn all the way.

Jordan Ta’amu
Dude played for a bad coaching staff but came in replacing a 5-star and we didn’t lose any ground. Would have been a solid starter for most SEC schools after only having 1 D1 offer
He’s now on an NFL roster with the Chiefs

Coker
Yeah, I mean I guess you could add Coker to this list.
Similar to Burrow, he never played a meaningful snap at FSU, lost two QB battles, and then his senior year he won a national championship at Alabama at age 23.

Dak waited behind Tyler Russel for a little bit.
I don't think that really fits in this thread. Dak was the starter halfway through his Sophomore year. Tyler was objectively better the year before. Dak didn't really hit his stride until the end of 2013 while also battling injury. He really didn't wait, the timing was just perfect for him.

Burrow is by far the better QB, but otherwise the parallels are pretty striking. Guys who might have never seen any meaningful playing time at their original school transferring, then by their final season winning a national championship.

Who mentioned Burrow before you?

Probably Tyler Wilson for us. He was headed to Tulsa (Malzahn was the OC there at the time) until Petrino offered him late as part of his first class. He played as a true freshman @ Texas (who won the Fiesta bowl that year) in a game we lost 52-10 and then missed the rest of the season with mono and the NCAA approved it as a redshirt year.
He had to sit behind Ryan Mallett for two more years then started as a RS Junior and was 1st team all-SEC in 2011. Got screwed by the John L. Smith year though where he took some brutal hits after our OL had fallen off from where it was the previous few years.

Any QB with NFL talent who sits is almost certainly forfeiting money and maybe mortgaging their future.
Loyalty matters, but not chasing a real opportunity is the most common of regrets.

Gotta be Matt Flynn for LSU. Waited 4 years before finally starting as a RS Senior and then led his team to a national title.
Blake Simms is another good one for Alabama.

In that vein Stephen Johnson. Transferred in from juco as a backup to Barker but stepped up big. Tough, courageous kid that overcame Tourettes Syndrome and other problems. He was basically held together with baling wire, duct tape and rubber bands at the end. He'd get knocked out of games and still come back. He had about 4 operations after his senior year and was so beat up he retired from football. He left his all out on the field and helped change the course of the program.

DJ Shockley is the easy answer. But honorable mention to Hutson Mason.

2168 yards passing. 7.8 ypa
21 passing TDs
