I'm not as sure about Bob Stoops anymore. It's been 16 years since that national title. And that was year 2 at Oklahoma with many key players that were recruited by John Blake. Stoops has several Big 12 titles, but a lot of flops on the big stage. Definitely a top coach, but among the best five? I'm just not sure anymore.

Also that title came against the wrong team. It should've been Miami in the title game instead of Florida State. Even Bobby Bowden admitted that afterwards. Miami would've beaten OU and Stoops never would've won a ring.

He's in year 18 and still competing for national championships. He's doing pretty well.

Yeah, but is just doing well and contending good enough to be considered a top 5 coach? That is the question.

At some point, you have to wonder if that is good enough for Oklahoma?

Dabo or Patterson.

Harbaugh, Petersen, Stoops, Dantonio, Shaw, Miles in the next tier (not in order).

The OP appears to be a UF fan so I think we were supposed to bite and say Spurrier.

Bob Stoops has won 9 Big 12 titles and 1 national title. He's played for a national championship three additional times and has a playoff appearance. By comparison, Spurrier has 6 SEC titles and 1 national title and was considered among the five best coaches when he left Florida at the end of the 2001 season. But he never played for another national title after he won it all in '96.

Saban and Meyer are obviously the two best coaches in the game right now. I can't think of three who are better than Stoops, however.

This. The reason Saban and Meyer are 1 and 2 is the natties. Period. To be called the best you kinda have to win the trophy that says you are the best. If those guys had no natties, no one would be saying they were 1 and 2.

For that reason, no natty, no reason to say a coach is number 3 either. So to answer the OP, Miles, Stoops, Jimbo are pretty much the few to debate over.

Say what you want but Miles is in the top 7 with Saban and Meyer being on top. When we win the NC this year he will be solid at #3.

These 4 are in the top 7. Not in that order because it doesn't really matter. It's hard not to have Fisher in that group, but I think he is right in the mix for sure. Probably can take Patterson out and put Fisher there.

Mark Dantonio
Jim Harbaugh
Gary Patterson
Dabo Sweeny
