I can't make up my mind on one guy, so I'm gonna just name a few guys who fit the bill.

- Gary Patterson: Defensive guru, does more with less year in and year out. His 4-2-5 defense has revolutionized football at all levels. Now everybody just copies him.

- Tom Herman: I've never seen a guy change a culture in one season the way he did at Houston. I love his swagger and the way he connects with his players. Nobody gets more out of his players than Herman.

- Jim Harbaugh: I don't care how much you hate Harbaugh, if you can sit here and say he's not a good football coach, you're delusional. To be honest, his personality and program-building strategies remind me of Vince Lombardi. I also can't help but smile when I see a guy line up under center with two fullbacks and a tight end and just run iso 30 at you 30 times a game.

- David Shaw: I love Shaw for the same reasons I love Harbaugh. He's not afraid to go against the grain and do what's unpopular. Not to mention, he recruits better than anyone in the country. He has to go after kids all over America because Stanford's academic standards are so high, and always seems to find multiple "diamond-in-the-rough" prospects. He does get a few 4/5 stars, but the backbone of the Cardinal football program is the diamond-in-the-rough guys.

Saban and Meyer are obviously the two best coaches in the game right now. I can't think of three who are better than Stoops, however.

I agree. I think he's also the only coach to win all 4 major bowls (Rose, Orange, Fiesta, and Sugar) in the BCS era as well as a BCS Championship. He's also won a Cotton Bowl to boot. I think he runs his mouth a bit much at times, but he's backed it up a good bit too...

A lot of these answers are biased. Not intentionally, but biased just the same. There is a lot that goes into winning a National Championship. A lot more than coaching ability, unfortunately. The 100 and some odd Division 1 football programs out there are not on a level playing field for a multitude of reasons, and for this reason alone, the best coach of all time may go relatively unnoticed at a school who is simply not able to compete with the likes of an Alabama.

Nick Saban himself would tell you he is not the best coach in the business, but that he is the best recruiter in the business. And it is hard to argue with his recruiting results. If you stack a team three deep with 5 star talent in a tradition rich program like Alabama a lot of coaches out there can win 80% of their games. And multiple natties.

The best coach in the game is probably Chris Klieman from North Dakota State University. Since 2011 he has won 90% of his games and five consecutive National Championships.
