As Notre Dame becomes increasingly irrelevant, is Bama becoming America's team?

You used to could find Irish fans all over the country and they were basically the face of college footbal even through the 90's with films like Rudie being huge successes. Now that Notre Dame is really in the lower depths of relevancy, I think Bama is taking their spot.

All the pieces are there. We have a couple movies under out belt(Forest Gump and Nick Saban in Blind Side) Also we are mentioned in a Steely Dan song and Big Krit. Couple that with all the winning as of late and our classic and recognizable brand, we are truly becoming the face of CFB. Thoughts?

I am not saying this to be a dick, but I have not seen many Bama founds outside of the SE in my life. I've lived in Houston, Columbus, NYC and now Miami and they have not had a large following in any of those places.

Obviously those are not all huge CFB places, but I know of multiple ND bars in all those locations

Notre Dame has been "America's Team" largely due to their huge Catholic following. People who otherwise wouldn't follow college football are "Notre Dame fans" because they're a catholic school.

And Nick Saban was depicted in LSU gear in The Blind Side.

Bama is just the newest bandwagon. It was USC in the early to mid 2000s.

Really, Larry? Alabama is probably one of the most hated teams in the country because of their long record of achieving excellence and crushing opponents dreams. They will never be universally loved. Like an earlier post pointed out, Notre Lame has the most fans because of the Catholic connection. Of course, if it wasn't for Lou Holtz reminding people every Saturday on ESPN that Notre Lame still has a football program, they would be beyond irrelevant by now.

I don't think a lot of Bama fans understand people's perception of Bama outside of the southeast....trust me, it's not a good one.

ND was America's team because they were the only one on TV every weekend.

Every team is on TV every weekend now.

That's no special thing.

There is no America's team.

ETA: And that Steely Dan song sucks. Christ that band just oozes shag carpeting, mutton chops and shame.

You mean Irish pubs? Yeah - a lot of those in every city.....as the nation's pre-emeinent Catholic institution, it stands to reason their team would have a nationwide following. They always have and always will....nevermind they have basically sucked since the late 80's. They had a good season two years ago, but we all saw what happened.

I also forgot to mention Broadway Joe and all of our starters in the NFL. Bama is being mentioned on Sundays a lot.

There's also that movie the Junction Boys.
Nevermind the fact that we have the two greatest coaches ever in our history.

Just because something is mentioned in a song doesn't mean it's a positive mention.

Donald Fagen said, "Walter Becker and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, 'You mean it's like, they call these cracker assholes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I'm this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?' And I said, 'Yeah!' He said, 'Cool! Let's finish it!'"

You have to be liked to be America's team.

It was your movie. But Sandra Bullock didn't want to bang Coach O. He just looked like a desperate fool.

If you'd ever actually travel outside the state (we both know you don't, it's okay), you'd know that few, if any, want to be associated with Alabama.

Your fanbase is a caricature on a wide scale. Hard to attract bandwagoners outside of your borders that way.

I think bama is bama's team in the state of alabama (except in Auburn).

Everyone else on the globe is nauseated and disgusted by them.
