SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff traveled to Washington, D.C., in May to push Senators for federal NIL regulation. That push appears to have paid off. Former Auburn football coach turned U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville announced Wednesday he’s leading the drive to regulate Name, Image and Likeness on a federal level.

Tuberville, now an Alabama senator, told Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger that he intends to draft a bipartisan NIL bill with fellow Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

“I’ve talked to all my [coaching] buddies. They’ve never seen anything like it,” Tuberville told Sports Illustrated. “When you don’t have guidelines and direction, no matter what you are doing, you are lost. They are all lost right now.”

I am not really understanding the mechanism for regulating this. When you turn 18, you are an adult. Are they going to say an adult can't work or start a business?

Congress has the ability and duty to regulate interstate commerce. That way no one is at an unfair disadvantage.

I don't think anyone is against players being able to profit off their names or start their own businesses. At least I hope not, but, the school's involvement in that should be regulated in some way. Problem is, I don't see how this is a federal issue. Unfortunately the NCAA was too chicken shite to actually discuss and solve this problem in a productive way.

“Tommy Tuberville, Joe Manchin intend to draft NIL bill after consulting Nick Saban

LINK

“Tuberville told Sports Illustrated that both he and Manchin have spoken to Saban about the issues surrounding NIL.”

The REC in action… unusually public… calling in some of their Senatorial support.

Given Tubbs' competence level, I'm surprised he even knows how bills come to be introduced

They should allow the schools to pay the players directly. All this TV money is coming in but it cannot go to players. Players can still do other endorsements but they will be legitimate and not phony like they are at the moment.

Well, the SCOTUS ruled the NCAA was breaking antitrust laws by regulating benefit caps. So this isn't really an issue of the NCAA not doing anything. So back to my point. There is no legal mechanism that allows an institution that has to comply with antitrust laws to rake in billions in profits while making illegal laws to suppress its workforce.

I am sure the Framers had just this type of thing in mind when they drafted the interstate commerce clause.
