Well we do know that the violent crime rate is over 363% higher than Chicago.
Memphis has a bad crime problem in parts of the city you'd likely have no reason to visit and in areas a good distance from the core. Geographically, Memphis is a large city, so if you were in Laurelwood or near Shady Grove Rd., you'd be a long way from the hot spots. Central Gardens, Chickasaw Gardens and other areas are very nice.
Otherwise, there's a lot of wealth in Memphis. Multiple corporate headquarters, St. Jude, beautiful churches and great parks.

I’m in that number as well. New Orleans has its issues too, but I can be anywhere in town at almost anytime of day within 15 minutes.

great parks.
Shelby Farms is badass. When I lived up near there, I would go to that massive dog park often.

Surprised Atl is not on there or Orlando(do not know if it is considered SEC territory.

Greene County is home and is God's country
I grew up across the Tombigbee in Sumter County but my dad was from Greene County. Was in Woods and Water in Tuscaloosa over the weekend and noticed there's a new clothing line named GreeneCo. They're a little proud of their products but not quite as much as Tom Beckbe.

Eutaw is where I was born. My Mom grew up in Boligee on the Tombigbee; we still own land in Boligee on the river. Ate at Diamon Jim's in Livingston a few weeks ago when I was in Eutaw visiting.

Very familiar with Boligee. When I was a student at Alabama, I organized a group of my fraternity brothers to gather palmetto leaves from the swamps there to use for our spring party. They still do the same except now it's a bunch of Yankees from NJ, NY and Mass making the trip.
I love Diamond Jim's but it's not the same since Miss Donna left us. She always made sure to give my mom a slice a caramel cake when she ate there.

By what metric defines "worse"? Murders? Cause Birmingham averages over 100 homicides a year. Montgomery hovers around 40-50. Of course, Birmingham has nicer areas. Vestavia and Mountain Brook are nicer than Pike Rd/East Montgomery.
Birmingham has three to four times the population, though, so Montgomery having half as many murders is not the gotcha you think it is. Montgomery is basically Birmingham with all the nice parts removed.

Jackson doesn’t even have potable water. Easily #1.
The surrounding Jackson area (madison, ridgeland, flowood, Clinton Brandon) is pretty nice and growing. Jackson has its fair share of issues like any city nowadays.

How is Atlanta not on this list? It’s got its bad parts too.

No Birmingham?
All three of my kids grew up in Texas, went to the University of Alabama and loved Birmingham so much they moved and stayed here. Before they made that decision, my wife insisted we relocate here after I retire. Multiple family members of hers from Colorado Springs have visited and have expressed an interest in moving here. Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, great road system, lots of wealthy suburbs, heavily forested region with lots of local parks, the largest state park in Alabama, 38 golf courses, near large lakes, etc. I have my choice of local sporting events and festivals every weekend. You can’t base your opinion on the one time you drove through and accidentally stopped to get gas at night in Fairfield.

Most towns have shitty areas you want to avoid.

Jackson is the shittiest city in the south. I hate stopping for gas there.

I'll go by state:
Florida: Tallahassee (South side of Tallahassee looks like a legit war zone).
Georgia: Augusta, Columbus and Valdosta (Just no redeeming qualities for any of them. And not close to anything nice either).
South Carolina: Columbia and Orangeburg (Columbia is not a great capital city and Orangeburg is just depressing).
Alabama: Mobile and Montgomery (I expected it out of Montgomery, I was surprised how terrible Mobile is the one time I went there).
Mississippi: Jackson and Meridian (No real surprise here, Jackson is the worst capital city in America and Meridian just felt depressing).
Louisiana: Shreveport and Alexandria (People will say New Orleans and Baton Rouge. New Orleans does have some positives, though the city is run terribly. Baton Rouge, at least you're close to some nice outdoor areas and places to fish. There is nothing redeeming about Shreveport and Alexandria and you aren't even close to anything nice or fun).
Arkansas: Little Rock (I've never been but I've heard it's bad).
Tennessee: Memphis (The only time I genuinely feared for my life and called 911 as a crazy guy tried to break through the glass in my car at an intersection, not kidding).
Kentucky: Louisville (Lived here for 2 years, unless you are into horses or bourbon there's not a lot for you. East side is nice, but West and South sides are terrible with higher crime than you would expect and their downtown for a city of that size is awful).
West Virginia: Huntington (Meth capital of Appalachia, just a sad place with little to no hope).
Virginia: Richmond (Similar to Little Rock, never been but a capital city I've heard is bad and has a high crime rate).
North Carolina: Lumberton and Fayetteville (Both are just really run down. Honestly NC is a really nice state, outside of the I-95 corridor. The I-95 corridor in NC for some reason is just awful).

To continue this, if you really think about it, it's impressive just how sh*tty I-20 is in general. I-55 is nothing to write home about, but I think I-20 is significantly worse.
I mean think about it, Florence and Columbia in South Carolina. Augusta and Atlanta in Georgia. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa in Alabama. Meridian and Jackson in Mississippi. Shreveport in Louisiana.
There is generally very little that is redeeming about I-20.
I mean even in Texas, it's not that great. Literally I-20's best cities are Atlanta and Dallas which really doesn't say much. And I-20 ends before it gets to the great scenery out west.
At least I-10, while boring at many times, goes through some nice cities, goes somewhat close to the beaches in Florida, goes through New Orleans and has some great views out west.
I-40 is probably the best cross country interstate in the South. You get to go through the mountains of NC and TN as well as through cities like Nashville and then again some great views out west, getting very close to Vegas as well.
I-20, just bad cities and a terribly maintained road in a lot of areas. Just not a lot of redeeming factors.
