I live in the city of Memphis. I would never live in the city of Jackson. All of the suburbs are okay. The city itself is garbage and all investment is going away from Jackson to the burbs.

I'd invite you over for game day but I don't want to inflict my descent into apathy and madness watching Arkansas play football on anyone other then my cat.

Jackson was an awesome town in my childhood and teen years. We had Waterland, Rapids on the Rez, Splish-Splash, Jackson Golf World, Meteocenter when it first opened was awesome and Surplus City too. We had Jackson International Speedway, cruising down McDowell Road on the weekend. Apple Ridge Bowling Alley. The Dock, Inez’s Place, Dutch Bar, Kathmandu’s, The Cherokee and tons other places where you were safe to go on the weekends. I worked at Baptist on State Street for years and was never threatened nor felt in danger. Jackson is like any other place. If you are stupid and go looking for trouble it will find you quickly. If you are there minding your own business you will be fine.

I spent a lot of time, money and bad lines in those places.

I miss Poets, Widow Watson’s and Scrooge’s too. Jackson had it going on back then.

ETA: A tidbit of trivia most don’t know. The end of Fortification Street all the way down to Herrin-Gear is in Flowood, Mississippi. It isn’t policed by the city of Jackson nor any law enforcement from Rankin County because they would have to cross into Hinds county to get to it. Lot of Shenanigans happen on the levy at the end of Fortification Street.

Poet’s was the best place to pick up divorcees.

I went down to the end of Fortification once. A girl from Jackson took me down there. Interesting times.

Nights that began at George Street and ended at Subway Lounge were the best.

There appears to be a whole drug culture that hangs out there in broad daylight. Remember the girl who came up missing, the wife of the cell phone repair place?

I didn't hear about that. When was it? What happened?

Like 3 years ago?The owner of CPR (cell phone repair store) wife’s car was found abandoned on the levy at the end of Fortification. She was no where to be found. Huge manhunt ensues and they find her body 4 or 5 days later on the side of the river with paraphernalia all around her. Unfortunately she had a history and they ruled it as an overdose.

I was working at Baptist the day she came up missing and after work I decided to drive down to end of Fortification to check it out. Huge mistake. Ran into the full complement of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Hinds County SO, City of Flowood PD and City of Jackson PD.

Ironically, while they were searching for her, they found 2 other bodies(only in Jackson, right). One was found in an old shed on Herrin-Gears’ property that wasn’t used anymore. I believe they felt it was a squatter and he died of natural causes. The other was a homeless person who they also ruled as natural causes.

Now I remember.

When I left Jackson over 10 years ago, I didn't really look back. I miss some things, but not a whole lot.

NE Jackson is nice. CCJ neighborhood is nice. A lot of Ridgeland is nice, like Bridgewater. Madison is nice. I wouldn't live in downtown Jackson because it would be boring, but its fine to work downtown.

Most of those areas above are perfectly safe as well. The difference is that the Jackson neighborhoods are closer to bad areas and you will see your fair share of homeless, etc. But they also are closer to more entertainment and dining. The entire Jackson metroplex is blessed with a number of very solid restaurants.

Madison is definitely more cookie-cutter with its neighborhoods and most of the dining is going to be high end chains, but you can live in a new house on a big plot of land and feel safe anywhere you go.

Madison is the only option for public school. If you are in Jackson or Ridgeland, you go private. And there are good options that are relatively affordable.

The yazoo clay will just as likely kill you before the locals can catch up to you.

Madison is a nice town but I find something about their building code restrictions off putting for some reason. It's very Stepford looking and I can never find anything because it all looks the fricking same

Brandon and NW Rankin are each just as good as Madison Central. Germantown also.
