Sure. And inner city Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, etc. are utopian paradises.

I go there a lot for work. I stay in Madison or Ridgeland. Good restaurants and bars. That area is nice, but you don't have to go far before it gets rough.

We’re not discussing Shreveport. We are talking about Jackson.

Lived in Madison for 9 or 10 years. Great area and has really become it's own city since then. That would be the way to go for your friend.

How are the private schools? All parochial?

No, you have plenty of private school options. Jackson Prep and Jackson Academy(JA) are probably the best in the state. You also have Madison-Ridgeland(MRA) up to the North. There are plenty of smaller private schools like Hartfield, but I don't know how good of school they are.

Different question: would you worry about your daughter getting a nursing degree at Belhaven, and living nearby (or on) the campus for 4 years?

Like many have said in this thread, Jackson proper is a shithole, particularly the southern areas. Downtown has cleaned up its act some and is relatively safe.

The suburbs are really nice. Brandon, Madison, Gluckstadt.

My daughter goes to Mississippi College in Clinton. That’s a pretty crappy part of town. But there are great areas to raise a family down there.

Lived in Jackson '01-'07 on E. Northside Drive and moved to Columbia, SC. Someone once described Jackson as being Columbia without the University and that is somewhat accurate (Cola is a lot nicer). I would take the job but not buy a house and begin my exit strategy immediately. The problem with Jax is that i don't want to live in the burbs and you don't want to be in city limits w/ the crime and inept gov't.

Depends on several things.

Our daughter works at Baptist and lived off of State Street (gated apartment complex) and was perfectly safe several years back.

She is now married and lives in Brandon.

Just avoid S and W Jackson and you will be fine.

If I could move to a place and not die, I'd be packing now.

Culcha is moving into Clinton and Ridgeland at an alarming rate.

As for Jackson itself, probably one of the most corrupt city governments outside of Maxine water's district in California.

Listen to Kim Wade on WYAB on 103.9 between 4-6; he delves into Jackson politics and warns everybody passing through Jackson about the gun and knife show that starts up on Friday at 6.

Have some people I work with that live in this area and they seem to have no issues.

Belhaven is on the edge of the bad part of town. Living on campus I guess would be ok, but if I was living off campus I'd try and find something in Flowood.
