How bad is it really? A friend has been offered a position in the medical field that will double his current salary. I’m trying to gather any information I can to help him make the right choice.

But right now all I can think about is this guy:

You don’t have to live in Jackson. Ridgeland, Madison, and Rankin County have plenty of nice neighborhoods.

As far as safety, generally pretty safe in areas where he would likely be working. I work downtown every day, and don’t have any problems. Like most urban areas, say Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Birmingham, etc., there are bad areas; your friend is likely never to see them.

My brother just moved to Madison Ms a few years ago which is on the outskirts of Jackson, for the same reason. He loves it

I lived in Jackson for 26 years.

I'm still alive.

While i would not choose to live in Jackson proper it has its good and bad areas just like every other major city, just a bit more of the bad as there was no geographical features preventing expansion of the suburbs like in BR or NO.

Madison is far nicer than anything in LA though if you dont mind a drive.

They did white flight the right way

My wife works as a nurse in Jackson. My cousin lives in Byram. There are good places and bad. Just like every other capital city in every other state. Madison, Brandon, and Pearl are some great places to live, though.

Nice restaurants and things to do if you have a little money. I didn’t think it was bad...but I’m not a pussy either.

Jackson isn't as bad as people say it is. I actually like Jackson.

My friend is a brilliant surgeon, but uh, let’s say he is a little naive to the realities of the world sometimes. I don’t want him to find himself in a situation he could have avoided simply because he thought he was being friendly when they were actually taking advantage of him.

Still not worth it...unless he currently lives in Mississippi, which in that case it’s all one big shithole...so why not.

Northeast Jackson is fine. Lots of medical people live there. The neighborhoods around Northeast Jackson hold their property value and operate independently of the city for the most part. The lots are mature and 10 minutes from everywhere in the metro. Just stay out of the south and west parts. There’s really no reason to go there anyway.

Also, people that fled to the suburbs are massive pussies and should be ashamed of themselves for giving up ground.

I had to travel to Jackson several times on business trips. Truly some of the nicest people I have ever met. I actually thought about moving my family down there....but then I remembered my kids like snow days (those are days when it snows so much buses cannot travel safely on the streets so the superintendent cancels school), so we stayed in Missouri.

It feels a little like one of those too good to be true type of situations.

But, it’s a lot of money.

My roommate at LSU was from Ridgeland. Everything out that way is nice. Old Canton Road is like Highland Road in Baton Rouge. Lots of money out that way and around the reservoir.

And that was in the 90s. Probably nicer now.
