“I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study, and the passionate possession of all Texans.”

“I like Texas and Texans. In Texas, everything is bigger. When Texans win, they win big. And when they lose, it's spectacular.
If you really want to learn the attitude of how to handle risk, losing and failure, go to San Antonio and visit the Alamo. The Alamo is a great story of brave people who chose to fight, knowing there was no hope of success against overwhelming odds. They chose to die instead of surrendering. It's an inspiring story worthy of study; nonetheless, it's still a tragic military defeat. They got their butts kicked. A failure if you will. They lost. So how do Texans handle failure? They still shout, "Remember the Alamo!"
That's why I like Texans so much. They took a great failure and turned it into a tourist destination that makes them millions.
Texans don't bury their failures. They get inspired by them. They take their failures and turn them into rallying cries. Failure inspires Texans to become winners. But that formula is not just the formula for Texans. It is formula for all winners.”

That's interesting perspective you bring, Mr. Mississippi; but it's not exactly correct. Texas is from the Caddo Indian word "teyshas" (meaning "friends" or "allies").

Texans really do embrace their state a lot more, and don't even have much room left to identify themselves as southerners. It's slightly annoying

1. Many, many rodeo folks and belt buckles around these parts; many, many non-rodeo folks and non-rodeo belt buckles around these parts.
2. The truck is paid for.
3. Sheep go through barbed wire fences, not over them.

geography, is hard to fricking understand? Those that live in the South are southerners. Those that live in the midwest are mid westerners. The meth must be getting to your head.

No comparison for Missourah and Texas.

You go to France and say you're a Texan and they will know what's up. Sure, they will ask if your ride a horse and will probably point their fingers like guns but they will instantly relate. Japan, those crazies will jizz on themselves and think you are a man amongst boys. Hell, in London, you could even visit our old embassy there.

You go to France and say you're from Missouri, they will look at you with questioning pity.

So you keep trying not to be a Yankee, ad we'll keep being Texan. And that is by definition being comfortable in your own skin.

Texas is not the South although there are a lot of cultural similarities. Dallas and Houston are huge sprawling metro areas with people from all over the country and all over the world. Houston i/m/o has a truley international aspect to it. In adddition to the Hispanic influence, there are a lot of Asians there and Dallas as well. Austin has more in common with Berkeley than it does with any other SEC college town with the exception of maybe Athens. Fort Worth feels very "Western" and after FW, civilization basically ends.
