Are people from Texas "Southerners"?

I've lived in Texas for over 10 years and can say honestly I've never heard anyone down here self-identify as a Southerner. They call themselves Texans, period. So are they Southerners or not?? If so, why didn't they get the memo?
Now mind you I wouldn't dispute that east Texas is culturally very similar to "the South", but then same can be said for southern Missouri. So no dicing up of individual areas of the state here. It's all or nothing, that's how the Rant operates. So is Texas Southern or not?
And keep in mind what's at stake here. Because in the eyes of a true Southerner, if you're not from the South, you are...oh the humanity...a Yankee!

I don't think of them as Southerners or MidWesteners, I think they are just Texans.

Agreed. You can just refer to us as Texans. No other moniker is required. It's synonymous with "Badasses," "Your Betters," and "arse Kickers." Just refer to us as Texans.
