Dale Earnhardt probably survives that crash if he wears a regular helmet. He still insisted on those chinless helmets and the story I read was that the impact of his chin on the wheel is what did him in.

While I agree Earnhardt should have worn a full face helmet, the crash would have likely killed him on the impact regardless. He died of a basal skull fracture which would have happened regardless of the type of helmet he was wearing. He hit the steering wheel because his left lap belt broke. The belt broke because they were multiple years old, and he had them mounted in a non-standard way (I can't remember all of the details, but he had them mounted with a weird twist in them.)

I remember listening to the crash on radio, was on the driveway with my parents. Wild

He would not have survived with a full-face helmet but he would've survived with a HANS. The crew that investigated the crash for NASCAR told them that, with metaphysical certitude.

I went to a NASCAR race back in the day. I promised the Lord above that if I ever got out of there alive, I would never go to another one for the rest of my life. I am continuing to live out that dream today. I believe it was the 1977 World 600 in Charlotte. I think I have the year right. I would have been 13.

Didn't mean to hurt your feelers buddy. I don't dislike the sport, I was just a little too young at the time.

It had more to do with your post not being at all on topic for the thread's subject, not my feelings.

I’d say the decline in viewership was in part to Jimmie Johnson winning damn near every race and championship over 10 years.

Also, they started pricing people out on campsites and tickets

NASCAR basically put on a clinic for how to lose a fanbase from 2005-2015.
I watched NASCAR go from being a sexy exciting sport to "I don't give a shite very quickly". Once I bought an RV to go to races, now I don't even watch on TV

Ernie Irvin is one few drivers to survive a Basilar skull fracture. Irvin was blessed to have been in 2 near death wrecks and survive.

He nearly killed Earnhardt in 1996 at Talladega.

NASCAR shitting on their fanbase in the 2000s is fascinating.

They did everything wrong, literally everything.

"remember where I was" moment.

I was on Bobby Jones Expressway heading home from my construction job (at the time) when I heard about it on the radio for the first time.

And I am not even a Nascar fan.

At the same time, track were raising ticket prices but more detrimentally, hotels were gouging race fans. Race weekends, they jacked their prices up to 200%-300%+ of normal AND required 3 night minimum stays. Thta simply made it WAY to expensive for the average, casual race fan.

sounds like what is now happening in college towns during the CFB season though its usually a 2 night required stay instead of 3.

I was 11 and this was probably the only athlete I ever cried about when they died
