They still have some meaningful restraints. For example, it would be useful for the NCAA to relax some scholarship restrictions in terms of yearly allotment and total roster allotment. I think programs are going to need to start taking on more developmental players - often local kids - and investing in those kids as veteran stop gaps when the portal screws up the top end of your roster. The best way for that to happen is for some more scholarships available…and maybe some category to note when a player is developmental and not active roster.

I said this just yesterday on another site regarding scholarship limits in basketball.
Honestly, who gives a shite about the scholarship limit in basketball anymore? Not many teams can even fill the full 13, because guys don't want to stay and develop, when they get larger NIL offers and more playing time at other programs.
We lost 2 of 4 kids from the the 23 class.
4 of our 6 from the 22 class (and the other 2 were one and dones currently on NBA teams)
We had 6 transfer out this season, after a Final 4 run. 2 were freshmen, 2 were sophomores, the other 2 are seniors. We replaced them with 3 seniors and a sophomore. So we replaced guys we wanted to develop, with guys that have proven they excel in a specific role for our system.
So now we have a deep team ready to make another run. Who would want to transfer on to a team, knowing you're gonna be third string? Pretty much nobody. We've had a walk-on get a scholarship almost every season under Oats.
There's no longer a competitive advantage. You eventually hit a point where you would just bringing on bodies to fill a slot. Why waste time and resources on a freshman, if they're just going to leave once they've shown they're D1 capable? It sucks, but with limited coaching resources, teams are much more inclined to let guys develop at mid majors, and bring them in if they hit the portal.
So if another team wants to give out 15, even 20 scholarships, why not let them? It's not like you're stashing them away, like it happened back in the day.

Anyone else feel like it’s going to be a brutally long summer and fall waiting for opening tip?
It’s only been a month since we stopped playing and only a few days since Cliff committed, yet I’m starting to get withdrawal symptoms.
Side Note: Injuries to Bama and Braves’ pitchers haven’t helped my distraction plans.

Gotta break it down to small things. Right now just enjoying UFL and Stanley Cup Playoffs. We’re two months away from the new college football video game. Then football season isn’t far behind
That’ll hold us over till Ball and Oats
But if you’re missing the excitement of MLB baseball may I suggest watching flies frick as an alternative.

Saw where Kevin O'Connor at the Ringer has Sears going 33rd to the Bucks. I'd hate to lose him but that'd be a damn good landing spot for him.

I know this is a long way away but after what I saw Nate recruit in this year, I’m getting greedy. Lol
Caleb Holt (he’s just outside of the Huntsville area, I think Madison County High or Buckhorn High, maybe Hazel Green?) What’s the latest? Does Bama have a shot at landing him?

This is where I wish the NCAA would allow 2 Summer exhibitions. Or maybe have a Summer League.

As he prepares for his first season at Arkansas, John Calipari said he won't stack his rosters with an abundance of talent, which was his tactic during his lengthy tenure at Kentucky.

On the latest episode of his "Ways to Win" podcast with former Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson this week, Calipari said the turnover in college basketball in the transfer portal era has changed his philosophy on assembling rosters.
quote:
You may think I'm crazy, but I told my staff I only want to have eight or nine guys," Calipari told Robinson, who is now executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. "They're leaving anyway, and why would I develop a kid for someone else? Why would I do that?"
quote:
Calipari said he has talked to other coaches who have discussed similar strategies.
Wonder how prevalent this becomes

Good call. Injuries never happen in sports and there is no possible way this backfires and leaves them with a 6 or 7 man rotation for an extended period of time.

I think eight is too few. You have to account for possible injuries. But also think 12 or 13 is too many, especially if you are spending NIL money on those last few spots. Around 10 might be the sweet spot if you want to maximize your NIL funds
Posted on 5/10/24 at 9:59 am to Allthatfades
Only having 10 or 11 on scholarship in order to concentrate NIL makes sense for schools with limited NIL budgets. If you have the money to burn and a coach capable of stacking talent it makes no sense not to use your entire allotment though. Sure you're going to essentially be flushing some of that money down the toilet every year but if I can afford to do that I'd rather build a rotation from the best 8 or 9 out of 13 than the best 8 or 9 out of 10.

That would be ALL schools. You can only spend what you have. Arkansas has allotted more NIL funds to basketball than anyone, but one of those freshmen is costing Cal over $2 million this year. He'll burn through the season's entire NIL budget by the time he gets to 8 or 9 guys.
