Sorry but players are already being compensated for their efforts on the field. Full rides plus cost of attendance stipends. Plus just about everything else is provided. Every meal, 24-7 snacks, clothes as needed, laundry services and etc.
And every non athlete paying for those things themselves (while funding many ADs thru fees) and all the academics are going to bang this drum like their life depended on it.

Should the University also be allowed to charge the player for marketing services because people want their autograph because of their affiliation with the University? Also, you will then start having players try to work "details" for extra pay. Meaning, they start showing up for birthday parties for $. Do they give less on grades? Etc
And yes, I'm one of the cool kids that played ball too.

So if Joe Cool is celebrated enough taking that History course, he'll get paid.
"Wow. Did you see Cool breeze through that exam yesterday? He's a lock to be All American this year!"
edit to say that "Cool breeze" was intentional.
Well, actually it wasn't, but I'm claiming it now

Who's going to monitor all these players families that will have them signing autographs till their hands fall off every time they're home?
Will these guys have to hire an "Uncle Nate" to organize things while Mom & Dad have a trunk full of memorabilia that needs a signature before he leaves to head back to campus?
Johnny fricking Football style, Make that Money while you can and live it up!

You don’t think kids forking over hundreds of dollars per semester in mandatory athletic fees to fund most of these departments should have an opinion on wether the already coddled, subpar academically people they support get paid even more than they do now?

Once you sign an endorsement deal, your only option is to play professional sports. Then the question is... where do you play professionally when the nfl has illegal rules discriminating against 18, 19, and 20 year old kids for the sake of benefitting older, richer people (see the nflpa)
If those kids are so valuable, where is the league to take them in?
They don't want them because they haven't developed.

Except this has NOTHING to do with paying a player TO PLAY a sport. It’s about allowing them to make money off their likeness, autographs, or even hold a camp in the offseason.
Except the real problem is there would be nothing to stop a booster from paying a kid $1M for an "autographed jersey" after the kid was on campus (on the promise of said $1M).

Wow, I actually agree with you on something.

The obvious method is a flat payment that every player gets - but if the star player is making the same amount as the 3rd strong kicker, that won’t fly.
How do you build team chemistry and the willingness to work together as a team when the guy next to you is pulling load of $$ shooting commercials while your arse is living off the stipend level $$? Will that lineman protect Joe Burrow when no one wants to pay for his autograph, yet Joe is loaded?
How does a staff coach players like that?

That is probably about the most practically deleterious points.
edit: Besides recruiting. Not sure how that's going to be dealt with. I think in the long term we're probably looking at minor league for football. Basketball is already a one and done deal for the major players.

How do you build that when the famous WR is pulling in $100,000 cash a year from his likeness and the green as grass freshman QB isn't?

"This is how I feel and my feelings are more important to me! I don't know how to implement my half-baked idea at all but we need this! Word salad!"
Either they are amateur or they are not. Universities provide MUCH more than just a scholarship; if all recruits want is money, then they need to take their grievance up with the NFL.

I do agree with players being able to profit from their likeness if they are famous enough to do so
It's not just this and it's not just Football and Basketball players. A lot of these athletes (swimmers, wrestlers, etc) would like to make money on the side as an instructor/trainer of their sport. Currently, they cannot do this and advertise that they do it - it's absurd!
The bill will allow athletes to do those types of things.

but I can't imagine the NCAA doesn't mind being able to trade on players' likeness for that time period and make boatloads of cash in the process
NCAA doesn't make money off jerseys or video games anymore.I would highly doubt theyd make any money of this new proposal.

Then don't sign to receive a scholarship, room, board, the money that already comes with it and the chance to enhance your future by representing Bama, UGA or Notre Dame. Just do something else like the unlucky majority. Go into the Army, work 2 part time jobs to go to college and wind up with $40K/50K or more in college loans. Or take a job at the mill or learn to sell real Estate. Be like everyone else.

Do you really think the Alabama mens water polo team is going to get endorsement money from this? This is for the football and mens basketball teams only. And only a few of them.
No it's not, dumbass. You people need to leave your houses from time to time and learn something.
Scenario:
You're a collegiate wrestler (not on scholarship). You would like to be a personal trainer at the local gym for high school wrestlers. You advertise yourself in the local paper as "Mr. National Champion Wrestler AlaCowboy is now teaching lessons"
Boom - VIOLATION
Tell me that's not absurd.
There are a hell of a lot more examples of this than football star or basketball star.

Exactly. Some of these morons have a really limited understanding of how collegiate athletics work and there is no point in even trying to reason with them.
