Alabama hiring the league office has to be number one for anyone to take this seriously

Mike Leach in the 2nd tier because…he’s Mike Motherfrickin Leach.
Seriously, he was great for State and the SEC. Wish we still had him. RIP

Anyone being honest would have to call LSU’s hiring of Nick Saban to be among the most important in the history of not just the SEC but also of college football history. What he built at LSU paved the way for what he did at Alabama. We never consider the man for a job if not for what he did at LSU. Almost 20 years after his departure and his impact can still be seen and felt at that university.

I think Saban needs to be in the top 5 twice. Him getting hired at LSU changed college football forever in multiple ways.
Definitely. He certainly changed the course of LSU football for the foreseeable future.

I think you should give him credit for more than just football.
The main thing he did was showed LSU they needed to spend the money to have success. And of course, how to spend that money wisely and in the right spots, so you don't end up like A&M. He built the program, but it also required LSU spending more money than they had in the past.
LSU has been able to sustain it because spending that money comes with a good ROI, it's not lost.
I think it's a safe assumption much of that got applied elsewhere in the AD for other sports. It certainly seems to be the case for Alabama, where it's been said he was the best financial investment the university ever made. Oats in basketball like the 3rd highest paid coach.
The great ones elevate everything around them, and he certainly did that.

Nick Saban getting hired by LSU put college football on track to become what it is today. He changed LSU’s program and then created an absolute terror at Bama. Everyone tried to keep up with Bama and the rest is history.

Honorable mention is Bruce Pearl.
Auburn has less than 8 seasons of successful basketball in 100 years before him.

Can’t argue with that. Maybe we need a separate BB thread for best coaches, I’m afraid, though, it would have a long list of Ky coaches

I only did Football coaches.
Otherwise you have to consider Skip Bertman in Baseball Adolph Rupp?
Hell Pat Henry has 36 Men and Women’s NCs.

Honorable mention
Jackie Sherrill at State (1991-2000). Even though the last three years (2001-2003) went off the rails,State during the 1990’s was no longer anyone’s Homecoming opponent.
We became very competitive and during the stretch from 1997-2000 were really good and played for the conference championship in 1998.
This came on the heels of some really bad years between 1983 and 1990.

Kentucky, Texas A&M and Alabama all hired the Bear.

Skip Bertman has to be in the list. SEC baseball is dominant today because of him.

He did indeed, and UT has gone 1-14 against Bama since. Karma is a bitch.

Joe Brady should be up there. He was a major reason we won the Natty.
Is the list limited to HC?

You need to add Mike Donahue for Auburn and LSU.

Auburn hiring Cam Newton
Alabama hiring the refs
You forgot Dooley hiring Herschel

quote:I would drop Smart for now, as I think Vince Dooley was the more important hire. Smart doesn't win a title at UGA unless they're an established power, and Dooley did that.
Since this is all football
1. Bear Bryant
2. Nick Saban LSU
3. Nick Saban Alabama
4. Kirby Smart
5. Urban Meyers
I'd also drop Urban in favor of Steve Spurrier. Before Spurrier, Florida was just Kentucky with more sunshine, but he turned them into an annual contender and a destination job.
