Few coaches have won back to back titles. Not sure why you’d downplay that.

The playoffs and even the BCS make it easier than the past. These days it's settled on the field, back then it was settle by opinions, records being the most important thing, etc.

Georgia would not have back to back titles in the days Spurrier coached, or even in the BCS years.

Saban never had back to back 10 win seasons at LSU

At Alabama he had about 16 in a row..

So who made who?

It's both. You need a school willing to put in the resources and you need a coach that knows how to properly use them.

LSU has kept up it's side since Saban and that's why they keep having at least moderate success.

Maybe. Not many coaches went b2b in the BCS era and only 1 has done so in the playoff era. It’s still ridiculous to equate winning b2b titles with “winning a few more games a year”.

Bruce Pearl turned Auburn from a top 275 school to a top 20 school.

It's time to accept the facts.

Smart took a perennial 10 win team and won 2 extra games per year.

Leave it to a Tennessee fan to overlook national championships.

There is a reason why Bryant and Saban are listed as top 5 hires. It is because they coached at the last football and factory in America. At UAT both Bryant and Saban had an unlimited and unsurpassed budget for overall payroll, recruiting, gold-plated facilities (plus now unlimited NIL $$$) and most importantly no pushback from the admissions office or the Bama administration. Bama football is only very vaguely associated with the University of Alabama and for all intents and purposes it is a totally autonomous organization. So beware and be forewarned that the drive-thru window guy at McDonald's could win 9-10 games every year at Bama.

“Johnny Vaught”

My sister is good friends with a coworker who has a house on Yonah Lake. Years ago their neighbor was a former Florida backup fullback when Spurrier was QB for them. He said in those days, you didn’t even look at a coach like Johnny Vaught. It was almost a sign of disrespect in his words. He said same deal with Bear Bryant. He had a cool “spirit house” with all sorts of old Florida memorabilia. Dude could still bench like 225 in his late 60s / early 70s. Super nice guy. Ran a mental health hospital for a while helping struggling young men. Great dude to drink with at his boat house / pontoon.

The point that most people miss is that LSU didn't commit to those resources until Saban arrived. That's what I mean when he changed the course of LSU's foreseeable future. I can't imagine LSU going back to the way it was in the 80s and 90s as far as an administration standpoint.

Completely changed Auburn. Easily a top five hire.

For Kentucky I would argue Rich Brooks was our best hire. Bear Bryant obviously is the best, but Brooks woke the apathetic part of our fanbase up to the fact that Kentucky can consistently win 7 or 8 games and go to a bowl. That might be child's play to the SEC powerhouses, but considering where UK football is coming from, it's a damn miracle. Joker Phillips didn't get more than 2.5 yrs before he was fired because fans finally has expectations to at least be competitive and respectable. Mark Stoops has elevated those expectations further, but I don't think we'd be here without Rich Brooks.

That's my criteria too; culture change.

Kirby Smart is great, but he didn't change UGA's culture, he's just delivered.

LSU's culture changed with Nick Saban. Nobody's happy with an 8 win season, that's the basement expectation now.
Steve Spurrier changed Florida.
