The model for success has changed for Alabama

College football recruiting is all about money now. Without the GOAT coach as a supplemental selling point, we won't be able to pull top 1-3 classes anymore and lead the nation in 5-star roster talent. We simply don't have the money to do it.
Byrne knows this. That's why he hired who he did. The two teams who played for it all this year were not the two teams who amassed the most 5-star talent. They were two of the most disciplined, well-coached teams in America, with good talent.
If we can stay in the 10-15 range from a recruiting standpoint and actually coach and develop the guys who want to be here, we can still have championship-level success. We're just not going to be able to overwhelm people with talent like we used to.

Agree but if Bama can just figure out a way to keep the pieces in place that are here it would make the transition easier.

If Bama isnt top 10 in recruiting still...ill be shocked

Agreed. The only point I’ll make is Washington and Michigan didn’t have to run through the juggernaut schedule that is the SEC. It’s easy to get a team hyped up for a handful of big games. It’s the week in, week out grind of the SEC that worries me about recruiting in the 15-20 range. Hopefully DeBoer is an expert at motivating his players, because with at 15-20 range ranked roster, you don’t have much room for “sleep walking” through games. I guess the 12-team playoff helps us in that sense, but to win the SEC, you’re going to need a pretty damn talented roster that is motivated every week.

Well said.
The new playoff system means you don’t have to be one of the 2 or 4 best teams anymore, you can get in if you’re one of the top 11. For a while, at least, being Top 11 is gonna have to be the target.

Our recruiting focus going forward needs to be on the kids who really want to play for Alabama! There are plenty of highly skilled players in that category. Teams will no longer to stock 5 stars because they portal out. We are probably looking at a couple of rough years, but it will workout!

I’m more convinced now this why Saban retired. Yes, he’s not a young man anymore but Saban didn’t want to deal with this shite.
You can buy these players services basically now and when someone offers more they just skip town to the next payday. Hell the pros don’t have that luxury.
The adults in charge fricked it all up, Saban warned us, Kirby basically said it after the FSU game. I’m not pissed at the players, they don’t make the rules that falls on the worthless ncaa, the courts and the politicians that pushed this shite.
DeBoer will have to adapt to the moneyball game. There’s plenty of talent that gets overlooked. All it needs is developed and that’s his game, do more with less. If he can do that (and he has wherever he’s been) he’ll be successful at Bama.

Yes, you have to develop a culture of continuity.

The NCAA is worse than worthless, they are actually a negative force. The few rules they put in place, like limiting the transfer portal at this time to schools that lost a coach, actually make things worse than if they had just done nothing.

Imo, we're starting to see in football what we've seen in basketball since the one-and-done era started. Championship runs are built on a veteran core and scheme. It took Calipari a generational talent to finally win a championship, and it remains his only one.

Why do you people keep saying Michigan doesn't have talent? They have a legit shot to tie or break Georgia's record for players in a single draft this year. That is a DEEP team.

... they'll be poached by a program with more money than Bama.

They had talent but it wasn’t a bunch of highly elite talent like UGA in 2022. They will have a ton of guys drafted but not too many in the first 2 rounds

I think everyone understands Alabama’s gameplan moving forward will have to be different.
What is a bit shocking is just how detrimental the combo of NIL and transferring rules/lack of can be for a top program.
The rules are set up in a way that allows the rest of CFB to essentially pass out enough cars to fully deplete Alabama’s roster.

They average around 15th nationally in recruiting. They had 1 or 2 five stars and a ton of 3 stars. That's the point ppl are making.

We were able to put together a gigantic contract for DeBoer. Around 100 mil all in is what it's projected to be...yet we can't afford to hang with other schools? I call BS.
Bama can hang in the NIL arena. Enough to pull in top 10 classes easily.

Good point, but I also think there Byrne wanted someone with playoff experience. DeBoer has spent time as a head coach going through the playoffs in lower division. I think that will help him when/if we can make it to the playoffs.

Yes and he is under contract with a buyout. Totally different situation. Chasing mercenaries is a fools game. Very short term focused. Let’s see what the next portal looks like for everyone. I think Ga. Has around 20 transfer already.
