Because of the city trying to impose service fee.

In case anyone else was confused about what Byrne was referencing: https://tuscaloosathread.com/ua-sports-alcohol-sales-in-limbo/

quote:

The measure in question, which the city council unanimously adopted last Monday, would apply a fee of $1 to any ticket sold for events where alcohol is sold that seat 1,000 to 20,000 people, $2 for events between 20,000 and 50,000 and $3 for any event with more than 50,000 attendees.

. . .

The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a license to sell alcohol at Coleman on February 1st, but a week later, adopted an ordinance to attach the new fees to ticket prices.

Really scummy to come back in after the fact and throw on this fee.

As if UA and UA Athletics don't contribute enough to Tuscaloosa as is

I love how the consumer is the one who pays in the end regardless. If the University plays along, they'll just jack up ticket prices because you now have the privilege of buying severely up-charged alcohol.

Probably got backlash from seniors and church groups and needed to find some poison pill to kill it after the fact, and this was it.

I highly doubt that. While Tuscaloosa is pretty conservative, the city as whole has long moved in from the alcohol debate. There was little to no backlash when they adopted entertainment districts for open containers, Sunday alcohol sales, etc. in recent years.

Do they not have proofreaders at the Tuscaloosa News anymore?

UA's athletic director Greg Byrne hardly criticized the fee

It is very unfortunate that the City of Tuscaloosa's plan would unreasonable target Alabama Athletics

One government entity trying to get money out of another, which means the public has to pay

Elect Democrats, get Democrat lawmakers, see increased taxes in any way possible.

It doesn’t hurt my feelings. Pint of JD is $12. I enjoy sipping it on the walk to the stadium. The seats are too damn crowded to enjoy a beer anyway if you weigh over 150 lbs.

I do agree that added fees are BS though.

Didn't you support Brookside just stealing from everyone who passed through town?

Nope. Total misrepresentation of my argument in that thread.

Disappointing but not surprised! Almost like a game of “one upsmanship”. UA and Byrne make announcement and then Maddox throws a curve the next week. Article was quick to throw in that UA is basically only school that doesn’t pay the local municipality for services and then slides a back handed UA offers other services in kind to payment. Bad move by the City. Hopefully, a compromise can be reached.

I think the compromise will have to come at the ballot box.

I can't believe that the "fee" situation hadn't been discussed with UA administration BEFORE it was discussed and voted on!
Something's not right here!

This was my first reaction, too. Maybe I’m too much of a homer, but I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Greg Byrne that he wouldn’t allow such a huge oversight to happen during this process.
