This was my first reaction, too. Maybe I’m too much of a homer, but I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Greg Byrne that he wouldn’t allow such a huge oversight to happen during this process.

I'd think that the blame would lie with Maddox. It's His council and his job to make sure the Council covers all its bases..that's just a natural process to touch base with UA administration on the parameters of the law!

It is possible that they knew about it and did this to put pressure on Tuscaloosa to rescind the fees, but I'm not sure why I would have a problem with that tactic.

That would be a stupid move! UA most deal with the Tuscaloosa city govt. on a regular basis. Why would they lose the trust (and they would!) of the city govt. for ANY reason?

so they should just go along with the beer tax to make sure they didn't hurt anyone's feelings?

They aren't losing anyone's trust. They just aren't paying the tax.

That's interesting. I have the complete opposite view of this.

Maddox needs to be careful and remember he's biting the hand that feeds him. Especially if he still has designs on a higher office. Piss off all the Alabama fans and see how many votes you get in the state, dumbass. A really dumb, short-sighted move by the city of Tuscaloosa. A portion of zero is still zero. They would have gotten a share of the sales if they had just shut up.

Yep. Incredibly stupid move on the part of the city council and mayor.

Actually it's stupid for either side to purposefully do anything to embarrass the other.
If Maddox didn't get everything square with UA admin., then he's an idiot!, AND if UA "backdoored" city govt., then they're the idiots!
But I'll guarantee you this: The two entities know which one it is!

Thought I read something that stated that the City gets like a 10% take on all concessions. Is that true? If so, the city is trying to get a larger cut of the pie without renegotiating. Bad move!!

Good...the crap is worthless.

Maybe if they start selling they can have Ruggs and Golding doing advertisements.

The problem lies in the fact that there wasn't a complete understanding between the City and UA admin. BEFORE the ordinance was even introduced. This was a TOTAL breakdown in communication between the parties, and ONE is to blame!

Really scummy to come back in after the fact and throw on this fee.

Probably got backlash from seniors and church groups and needed to find some poison pill to kill it after the fact, and this was it.

No, it's the fact that it was going to cost the University over $2,000,000 just for football. I'm glad they refused to go along.

You guys know who the real loser is in this battle?

The beer distributor.

Byrne should let the local distributor fight this battle for him. He's the one who stands to gain the most. And the city would still be collecting the 3% city sales tax.

That's how it should be. Beer consumers can pay sales tax on beer. What the city is wanting is to basically make every man, woman, and child who obviously don't drink beer to pay a tax for beer consumption.

This is a winnable fight, but let the beer distributor fight it.

City of Tuscaloosa may rue the day they decided to do something that clearly the UA Board of Trustees acceded to from the UA AD.

May take a minute but don’t be surprised if UA ends up still doing this in the future but with the city losing a revenue stream in the process.

They should move 3 football games to off site locations to teach Walt a good lesson. Maddox is a socialist who uses police to make the City money. His tactics make Brookside Speed Traps look like amateur night contestants. He has a whole division who do nothing but give MIPs to raise funds while shootings across town take 30 min for response. Kids need to register to vote in Tuscaloosa and send this loser to work for one of his buddies who got rich after the Tornado due to his confiscation policies.

Walt Maddox indeed sucks but I don’t know any socialists who are interested in helping finance capitalism and real estate developers. What you’re describing is a liberal.

University of Alabama, City of Tuscaloosa Announce Compromise Regarding Alcohol Service Fee

After a public spat halted the progress of alcohol sales at UA athletics events earlier this year, both parties revealed that a compromise had been reached on Wednesday.
quote:

According to the press release, UA will provide specialty service funding to cover the increased fire and rescue, police, transportation and infrastructure services that are needed on game days in Tuscaloosa. UA also introduced a new scholarship program intended to raise funds for scholarships for Tuscaloosa police officers and firefighters.

Dare I say, this makes perfect sense? Kind of surprised UA wasn’t already covering the costs of game day policing.
