We had a coach who was too stupid to say yes to Pavia. Lea made strategic decisions that led to a successful situation. That's enough for me to give him the credit. He EVEN swallowed pride and hired his Offensive coordinator. Something that most coaches wouldn't do. I'm bringing this up because freeze failed at every turn where Lea made it work. That proves he's a good coach.

Chesney is cool but almost all his experience is in the New England area. He would be perfect for penn state but not reasonable for us here.

Yeah I guess Harsin’s mountain west experience wasn’t a weird enough fit.

Supposedly when Cohen hired Freeze he also interviewed Sonny Dykes, Dave Clawson, and Luke Fickell ... Chesney reminds me of those names, odd fits without a lot of ties to the region.

Look it seems that Durkin will be on staff regardless. We can't hire Lea! No team needs two coaches that look like Lord Voldemort. I kid...I kid! I like Lea. Don't want him as HC though.

Fit/ties to the region is only a problem if the candidate doesn't know what he is doing. Neither Saban nor Meyer had any ties to this region and both had never even held a coaching position in the SE before they landed at LSU and Florida.

It also won't help a bad coach succeed either. Nobody has more "fit" than Luke Fickell at Wisconsin. Freeze was also hired here based off of fit/ties.

Harsin’s problem was he didn’t recruit at all.

If Chesney is a recruiter and as long as he can hire coaches with ties to the South then that is okay by me.

This. Regional fit will have jack crap to do with a coach being successful. It's one of the dumbest reasons not to want to hire someone. Harsin didn't work out because he was a jackass who wouldn't recruit. He had the same issues at Boise, it just didn't matter as much because they were the big dogs of their conference at the time.

Clark Lea would be an awful hire. His success is Pavia, and the coaches that came with Pavia. The poorest man's Gene Chizik.

Agree - the “but he brought in Pavia, and the Coordinator, so he deserves the credit” crowd is terrible. Just hire the coordinator then (sarcasm).

Lea would f*cking suck. Recruiting would tank and he’d be gone in 2 years

Do not push Auburn to screw the hire up too bad. The AD's hiring abilities has fans begging for people like Durkin whose entire success was losing to Vandy and the awful Lea, as it is put.

It was 100% the team getting a rush from changing HCs and not his coaching. His defense disappeared when he became HC and that's his only positive at Auburn.

Here's Sumrall talking about coaching changes in general. Said he talked to Kiffin this week and believes Kiffin should coach 4 teams at once.

I think my main concern with him would be apparent lack of regional ties.

That is why you hire assistants that are familiar & this is the NIL era.

I also think the Cignetti comparison is overly simplistic and sets unrealistic expectations.

Who is doing this comparison? Is it you because he is a JMU? Have you even done any looking at his career? Have you watched any videos of others talking about him? He has his team flying this year...

I don't know why people talk about region...I mean Napier failed he had regional ties in recruiting, Freeze had good ties he failed, Kelly didn't have ties he failed because he just kinda quit but they recruited well.

I mentioned Chesney when we first started talking about firing Freeze. I wanted Cignetti when we were searching for Freeze, because I went out & did some analysis on him & staff. Chesney is young & might make mistakes at the next level but he will win given the right circumstances.
