I still don't think that we are "struggling" to run the ball though.

My intentions weren't to generalize the run game as a whole with my comment. I feel like where we are genuinely struggling is in the interior when it comes to getting push, especially in short yardage situations. I can't remember the last time I saw our OL get stonewalled like they have multiple times this year in those situations.

If you look at the highlights from the 10RC game you will see just how many 3rd down conversion Bryce made not only with his feet but also the passes completed on 3rd and more than 6. We would be in a world of shite without #9 this year.

The loss of Chace is huge because we really needed but we need a burner in the backfield to help #4.

This OL is just average at best and the fact #79 is still starting doesn't bode well for the talent behind the guy. It APPEARS either the current OL coach isn't what was said about him or the OL evaluations by Flood and Nick were off the mark.

i predict some competition and some changes during the off week. Maybe not that we can see as far as who starts but possible early changes

Also I would like to see us be more creative on first down plays. It seems like when we do throw on first and dont complete it or get little yards we always run on second down. Always it seems.

Do we have a breakdown of production based on the play's direction? I'd bet most of those negative plays come when we run right.

Per PFF - Brian Robinson's breakdown by direction

Left - 66 carries, 358 yards, 5.42 YPA
Right - 75 carries, 347 yards, 4.63 YPA
Overall - 141 carries, 705 yards, 5.00 YPA

Here is where one really sticks out

Outside Left - 33 carries, 194 yards, 5.88 YPA
Inside Left - 33 carries, 164 yards, 4.97 YPA
Inside Right - 46 carries, 233 yards, 5.07 YPA
Outside Right - 29 carries, 114 yards, 3.93 YPA

Owens need to move back to center. He’s playing out of position.

He's not a natural center, he's a tackle they moved to Center and failed.

He's not the answer there either...

You may be right in some position changes.

Looks about right. Run behind Neal and produce. Run behind Owens and get stuffed. I don't know how much of that awful outside right production is on Owens and how much is on the TEs, but we either need to figure something out with that or stop running that way.

The OL has improved its run blocking but they’re still not very good.
With the exception of Neal, the Oline lacks physicality (lack of a mean streak), and quickness. I also, question their individual strength at point of contact...there's no push at the LOS.
I'm honestly afraid that this may well not be a correctable situation...at least this year.

I find it hard to believe that Nick has waited 8 games to even send in a replacement for #79 if he had one. This chatter about making a change during the open date is more wishful thinking than reality.

George didnt exactly look good when he came in at the end of the game against UT. He's very big and looks the part, but I'm not sure if the light is on yet.

Latham has been working at RG. They had him in as the 4th OT on a GL play against UT, and he whiffed.

I love hearing all of these "experts" that think they know how to fix the line. If there was anything that could be done, Saban would be doing it. Do you really think you know more than Nick Saban??

Chris Owens is our best option at RT. If you're saying that Saban is wrong, then you're a troll and should be banned.

Thanks for posting these stats. This is the kind of info I was hoping this thread would generate. Good stuff.

I think another thing that makes it "feel" worse is that our runs seem to be either longer runs or stopped at the long. It's shocking to see almost 5 ypc across the board like this.

Without giving a different player a chance in real game time, you can't know that. Playing someone with two minutes left in a blow out won't show it.

And if it's actually true, that says a lot about the OL coaching. Not having a true tackle ready to go at that spot this season is a problem. Owens is not a tackle.

According to Chef on BOL, the coaches have had an open competition multiple times at RT this season and Chris Owen's has held on to the starting job every time. At this point, I think he's our best option and just needs to play with more consistency. I may be off here but I really think center is our weakest link on the line. I've seen dalcourt get blown up too many times for my own liking.

IDK maybe we should move Owen's back to center and roll with whoever else we have a RT. I think if there was a time to try a big change, it's going to be this week. If we trot out the same Oline vs LSU then I think we have our answer on who we're riding out the rest of this season with

I could deal with it if he seemed to be in command pre-snap, recognizing blitzes, etc.

I'm hoping we are able to mix somethin up in the off-season but not very confident in it at this point.
