I also wonder how this will affect Dunaway working nights at CBS 42. Working till 11 pm with the news an having to get up at the butt-crack of dawn to do your morning show will get old, fast.

“Trash on the Table”

Is a wonderful segment. What's your point?

The Roundtable isn’t perfect but it’s better than 80% of other sports radio. The Opening Drive did suck though.

You mean the QB from 6 championships ago who threw 2 picks and like 7 yards in New Orleans couldn't carry a show into its third decade?

Say it ain't so.

I understand that Jay sold a lot of advertising. The show had been dated for some time. Hope non of the three starve to death.

Al made a great living in the NFL for like 18 years. He was smart with his money and still has connections to AU people.

Barker is about as diversified of an investor as you can be with ownership stakes in restaurants, insurance, retail, app development, real estate, and more. He makes more money outside of JOX than he ever did inside. And he's married to a country singer who has a high net worth too.

Tony is the one who I'd be most concerned about. He isn't particularly talented. His pretending to be a frat boy and acting like he knows more about sports than he really does got old...quick. I doubt he works in sports moving forward, but maybe another radio station will give him a DJ opportunity.

Either way, if their contracts weren't up, they'll all be paid through end of contract any way.

Were Dunnaway and Brown on in the mornings way back when? I liked their show just as much before the station threw Lance on top of them. Lance was a hold over from one of their other shows that got the axe. Maybe they keep D&B together in the morning, and move Lance to host a show at lunch with some other new talent.

Seems like Opening Drive has been the morning staple since at least around 2004. I don't remember Dunaway being on around that time. Wimp and Sonny used to follow OD, then I think Dunaway & Brown took that slot. Then they added Taylor when Finebaum started and he got bumped from his afternoon slot with I think Ian Fitzsimmons. At least that's how I remember it, but that's probably wrong.

Seems like I'm missing another guy that was with Taylor for a while though.

That could work, but the three have made it work so well now, I'd hate to see them break up.
IIRC, Lance was on with Ian Fitzsimmons at one point.

This is not true. Obviously you didn't listen to the roundtable.Lance has always been on the roundtable. Ian Fitzsimmons, his former cohost moved to Dallas to work for Espn. Now he's working for big Espn Radio on Freddy and Fitz. D and B used to compete with Finebaum. When WJOX acquired Finebaum they put D and B on the roundtable and it was radio magic. Lance is also one of the best salesmen they have at WJOX.

This is way off base. Kurre was the best DJ in town before he joined the OD. He never claimed to know more about sports than any passing fan. He's the only one of them that should actually be in radio.

Yeah, Tony's been in the Bham radio industry for what, 30 years? He's well known, well liked in the industry, and has good connections for ad sales. He'll be picked up by somebody.

There will be new show for 10am to 2pm soon.

so nothing is changing, just moving time around

He's asking if the Opening Drive guys were terminated, not the Roundtable guys.

I am from Birmingham, and was in intern on the OD during college. D&B were indeed on in the mornings on AM 690. WJOX at the time was the OD 6-10, Roundtable with LT at Ian from 10-2, and Finebaum 2-6.

Ian left in 2008, and they hired this tool named Brien Straw to replace him on the RT with LT. Straw's gimmick was that he hated Alabama sports culture, and made fun of alabama fans every chance he got. Needless to say that didn't go well, and their ratings were terrible, and he was fired. One thing that helped the decision to fire him was that D&B's contracts were ending, and they said that they weren't willing to resign if they stayed on AM, so moved them to the roundtable, and the rest is history. One of my last days as an intern was the first day of LT and D&B. Hands down the best show that has ever been on JOX.

Thanks for the info! As an intern (and I understand if you don’t feel comfortable taking about it) what were your opinions of the Opening Drive? I’ve always felt the on-air chemistry was lacking to put it nicely.

Tony was just too loud and obnoxious for a 6am show in my opinion, and the other two didn’t really like to play along with his shock jock style questions and gimmicks.

Jay, while he will always be valued by Bama fans for his play on the field, never seemed to have any insight into the program. You would expect the “Bama guy” as a show billed the way it was to have inside information or something, but he never brought anything to the table that everyday fans didn’t already know.

Del Greco, though he was the Auburn guy, was about the only one I cared to listen to on that show. He gave good insight into the areas you would expect him to: inner workings of the NFL from his time with the Player’s Association, a feel for things around the Auburn sporting programs, as well as good opinions on other sports he had knowledges of (golf, soccer, football special teams).

Sans Del Greco, I thought the show was a disaster, and am surprised it stayed on the airwaves as long as it did. Compare it with the Roundtable where all of those guys seem very professional and hardworking to bring an interesting program every day.

I’m curious what your opinion was on the inside?

The fact that so many people actually think The Roundtable is a good show is a testament to just how bad sports radio is.

Does Bill King still do a show? I don't have satellite radio anymore.
