quote:It just sucks. I might as well be listening to any three random dudes at work on monday after the game. I mean, I listen to it a lot when I'm at lunch, but it's rare that I'm entertained or interested. I flip over and listen to the other terrible guy on huntsville sports radio sometimes because he has more interviews.
Why?

The fact that so many people actually think The Roundtable is a good show is a testament to just how bad sports radio is.
It really is a horrible genre full of awful people. There are a few that are really good at it, but most just come across as the guys that peaked in high school and still trying to live off that.

Were Dunnaway and Brown on in the mornings way back when? I liked their show just as much before the station threw Lance on top of them. Lance was a hold over from one of their other shows that got the axe. Maybe they keep D&B together in the morning, and move Lance to host a show at lunch with some other new talent.
Lance has a job because he's a hell of a salesman. He secures all the ad spots for the station.

Just to pose a question to everyone, who do you like in sports talk? I left Alabama 7 years ago and only will stream local sports talk if I'm trying to get news which is rare. I tend to not like the National lineups, ESPN is now incredibly terrible, Fox Radio is ESPN 5-7 years ago and CBS is mediocre. I like ESPNU on siriusxm but only because they talk college sports. I can't say I really like any of the personalities.

I love those guys, say it ain’t so. Delgreco was kinda annoying but Barker is good stuff. Good family man with strong Bama ties. What’s not to like.

And yet, he told the audience practically nothing of substance related to the Bama football program. He hardly seemed to know what the callers were talking about when they asked him questions about various player’s performance each week.

I’m curious what your opinion was on the inside?
First and foremost, Al, Tony and Jay are all great guys. It was a great show to work on and I wish them all the best.
You are right in that Tony wasn't a sports guy, but he was a radio guy, and that's something that Jay and Al were not. Especially early on, he was the glue that held them together. Sure, he never played football, but he's an OG Birmingham radio veteran, and he was the only one who knew how to do a radio show. If you heard the show on a day when he wasn't there, sure, there were less lame jokes, but the show was definitely not as smooth.
The truth about Jay was that he just didn't need the show at all. He obviously doesn't have to worry about money, and the show was a pretty low priority for him. Al and Tony would be in the studio at 5 am recording spots and prepping for the show, and Jay would walk in every day at 5:55 am on the dot. He also wouldn't bat an eye at taking vacation on a big day like national signing day. But, like I said, he was a super cool guy. Not a diva at all, he just had his other priorities. He was also the golden goose in terms of ad sales. If you wanted him to read your spot, he was the most expensive at the station by a long shot. He also bought me breakfast almost every day.
Al was in a similar situation to Jay in terms of not needing the show, but the show was definitely a bigger priority for him. He worked really hard to make it as good as he could.
The OD was really a testament to how big of a deal Alabama and Auburn players can be in Birmingham. All of the flaws pointed out about the show are valid. But, they lasted 13 years going head to head with Rick and Bubba. That is no easy feat.

I don’t even mind that, he just got on my damn nerves
Everything you said though sounds about like I figured. Thanks for the insight!

I think Finebaum is an incredible interviewer, so I'll listen to his show if he has someone on I want to listen to. His show was brilliant before it went national.
Same with Dan Patrick.
Bomani Jones is decent, though I don't listen to him that often.
And I like the Pardon My Take podcast, mostly because it's a bit satirical of sports talk radio. They get some good guests though.

I like Adam Schein, and while I can see why someone would hate him, I enjoy Scott Ferrall. I think that he is hilarious.

Link?

Nothing about Jays lack of knowledge of the players in that link. His son is about to be on the frickin team and you think his dad, former national champ, doesn’t know the players or how they did each Saturday? Dude lives Bama football.
So dumb
So dumb

He may know it but he didn't share it on the radio show. The link was only relevant because it proves the show sucked, therefore it got cancelled. Barker wasn't even there most of the time. Maybe if it would have been a priority, they would still be on the air

I liked Bomani but he is transitioning to TV. I need to give DP a go. I sometimes watch clips on youtube and enjoy them most of the time. I don't enjoy F-baum as much now that neither he nor I are based out of Bama although I will toss it on the TV if I can't find anything else to watch.

I'm not sure what he does in his spare time but I enjoyed his radio show.
