re: If Saban's successor has this run in his first 5 seasons, are you happy?

OSU is basically performing at the level described in the first post.
They haven't won a national titles in 5 years.
I'd be on the fence about that. I feel like OSU is a much more legitimate title contender than Notre Dame or Oklahoma, but they have gotten their doors blown off in the playoffs every time they have made it there since 2014.

He is on an unprecedented run and any little detail the new coach does that is different or doesn’t measure up will have some on here losing their minds
I am of the exact opposite mind. I want a clean break, or as clean a break as possible. The new guy needs to come in and be his own man and run his own program. Any similarities to how Saban did things should be purely coincidental. Efforts to be Saban 2.0 will fail spectacularly.

100% agree - the 2 biggest additional things to being a good football coach to me are
(1) Supreme confidence
(2) Very specific way of doing things
Honestly - the football version of Nate Oats. Probably a more established guy than Oats was when we hired him, but a similar makeup and "system" that is completely relied on and trusted in with the accompanying confidence in it and yourself. If you don't have those things, this job post-Saban is going to eat you alive.

We're starting to describe Lane you know.
Which would either be a massive home run or a complete disaster and nothing in between.

I'd be really conflicted. I think in terms of purely coaching football and convincing teenagers who are good at football to play for him, Lane is fantastic. When it comes to pretty much everything else he's a total wild card. Has he grown up enough to handle a big time job? Because he's had three and shite them all away. There's also the potential that he knocks up some 20 year old co-ed. We will know more on that front 4-5 years from now when Saban's retirement is actually an imminent possibility though.

In the same line of questioning, what current coach would make you crap your pants in a bad way if they were hired to follow CNS.
Mine would be Deion Sanders.

frick no. With the talent we have stockpiled, a GA could manage to win at least 1 national title.

how would y'all feel about deion sanders, if he does a good job with jax st? i would be open to him or kiffin, if he does good at ole miss. none of the others on that list above excites me at all as a potential hc.

What has Deon Sanders ever done to warrent handing him one of the premier coaching jobs in the world?
Posted on 6/3/21 at 8:49 pm to crimsontater
Deion Sanders?? Good Lord. He’s lucky to even be a head coach of a college team. He’d get eaten alive

No one can fill in his shoes. I am going to be fat, happy and content for a LONG while until our next run.
For me, being in legitimate contention each year is the key. The record you posted above would do for me for the first 5 seasons, by the record alone.
I suppose part of what's missing is the nature in which the wins were made. If I get the feeling all the wins are earned and luck really wasn't a major defining role each year? I could stomach that record out of the gate for post-Saban era.
I ain't worried about that era at all yet though, so keeping this type of conversation going doesn't do us any favors for the foreseeable future.

I'm trying to think of who I could see replacing Saban but he still has 5+ years left. The coaching landscape can make drastic changes in just a few years.

That would be disappointing, assuming Saban leaves the cupboard full.

One thing I think it will do is energize fans at games . Crowds were a lot rowdier when the outcome of SEC games was not a forgone conclusion most of the time . Wins will be a little harder to come by and more appreciated IMO. It will make anyone who hasn’t already appreciate what we have now
