Milroe's running ability don't scare anybody because they already know he's a running quarterback
He's a dynamic runner. He's gonna break a lot of big plays with his feet. There was a play against Arkansas where their LB took one false step and Milroe was around the edge and into the secondary for a big gain. In CFB, a lot of teams are gonna have a hard time matching that speed.

I would literally play man to man on the outside with one deep safety because he's not a passer at all YET
And we'll run a lot of zone reads and short easy throws while occasionally taking deep shots. It won't be prolific but if the line is strong and the RBs are good (like it seems will be the case this year) we can kick some arse with that offense.

Ty dislocated the thumb on his throwing hand in the 1st quarter
Would explain some of his poor throws. I like that he's tough enough to play through that. But 3 weeks without being able to throw is not good.

Did anyone have any takeaways from Steele running the defense or too hard to tell anything?
can't take a ton. the offenses ran a million pass plays so the defense didn't have to make any real reads.
DL is the weakest group in the unit. Smith, Eboigbe and Oatis got moved off the ball way too much for me. There's a ton of guys behind them that are simply ok, nothing more.
No Lawson, Turner or Brasswell. No questions about them anyway. But if I was picking a starter a WLB based on this game, I really like Trezman Marshall. He's big, he can run and he was everywhere.
The back end covered well with the caveat it was a spring game and the officials let them play. Caleb Downs is a somebody. Reminds me of HaHa Clinton Dix but a touch bigger and more physical. And unlike Battle and Hellams he has the range to get deep. Downs will start along with McKinstry, Arnold, Moore and Story. Jake Pope could be the dime but Devonta Smith (dnp due to injury) will be heard from. Dude is jacked now.
Overall it feels like Steele will keep things a little simpler. I saw guys attacking instead of reacting, which has been infuriating the past two seasons. The first group blitzed Milroe from everywhere which I liked. If the defense can play fast that will be the first step to getting back to Alabama football.

Milroe has game changing running ability, but as a quarterback he’s heavily flawed compared to Simpson. His pre snap reads on disguised coverages was absolute abhorrent. The amount of simple sacks he took because of it was terrible, and Simpson has great running ability even if it isn’t elite.
I love the kid, would love for him to succeed. But you’re going to see Texas A&M all over again, again and again and again.
I think it’s a clear Tua-Jalen situation, and I’m not talking talent. Jalen handicapped that offense heavily in 2017, I don’t think Saban waits a whole season to swap them out this time

I've only watched the a day game once, but I didn't see much from Simpson that excited me.

Agreed.
The bottom line is that we have running backs to take the ball and run down field with it. We don’t need a quarterback to be a running back: we need him to add the passing dimension to the offense. Hurts was the prime example of how limiting a poor passing, run first quarterback can be.
I like Hurts and am very pleased that his game has developed and that he’s succeeding.

Not much to take away from a scrimmage game where an offense that will be built around motion, movement and rolling out did none of those things. Milroe looked pretty similar to what he's always looked like. Maybe Rees can build an offense around him, but stuff like that heave it up throw from his own end zone is the sort of consistent stuff that your QB just cannot ever do.
Simpson is an incomplete from me. He didn't look great or terrible, but I'd like to see him running a full offense built around his skillset with motions and easy throws and all that before I really make any judgement.

I took that play as a conscious decision to arm punt rather than take the inevitable safety in a setting where one finger touching him would have been enough.
The issue there from Milroe was failing to adjust the protection to prevent a free rusher on his own goalline. Unless part of what the coaches were doing was intentionally having him not make pre-snap adjustments to see how the OL handled it, which is entirely possible since A-Day is literally just a really elaborate practice session, his inability to recognize where blitzes were coming from and adjust accordingly was my biggest concern with Milroe.

I’d also like to see Simpson operating with the first team. Having the best talent around you does tend to help. I’m still not convinced either guy is ready to be THE guy by the fall. Biggest difference for me was that Ty protected the ball outside of one insane play by a DB. That Milroe arm punt was the stuff that gets a middle school QB benched.

Yea, there is just so much of this stuff in spring games that I find it very difficult to take anything away from it other than guys who are new who just pop athletically (Downs and Haynes, for example). Complex positions built around scheme and stuff like QB........I mean what exactly are people expecting? We were running the most base of base sets and plays in an offense that I'm guessing even more so than general that we didn't want to tip our hand with at all. The accuracy stuff wasn't great, but I'm not sure a lot of those throws were even there for anything with a good throw. There just isn't that much to see in these things.
I checked the thread during the game and saw people complaining about goal line plays. Do people seriously expect us to run anything other than snap, hand off on the goal line in a spring game? "Hey Texas, here is one of our new motion options on the goal line. Go ahead and do an install for it."
I'm not any more or less concerned about QB than I was on Friday afternoon. I think it's probably one of the more raw/weaker position groups on the roster at the moment, but I don't think it's a team killer unless other things don't work (OC in general, OL, run game).

Exactly. People are chomping at the bit to see the team be championship ready in the spring, and it just doesn't happen like that. Its never happened like that.
I thought that the defense looked immediately more sound, and playmakers stood out.
I think that our RB room is possibly the best in the nation.
No one really jumped off the screen at WR, but I also think that our secondary is pretty damn good.
Simpson didn't look any better throwing the ball than Milroe IMO, so Milroe's legs put him over the top for me, but who knows what will happen between now and September.

Tommy Rees Brings New Energy, Confidence to Alabama Offense (SI)
Despite the short amount of time that Rees has spent with the team, it's very evident on the Crimson Tide's sideline and locker room that he has already earned his player's loyalty and respect.

Hard not to be excited about Rees after reading that.

It happens every year too. People arrive at very strong conclusions based on A-Day and may not let go of them for a year or two even though we have seen countless examples of A-Day MVPs never doing anything of significance and guys who play like shite going on to have great seasons.

All we have to do is go back two years ago when Agiye Hall had some big catches at A Day and everyone thought that he would be the next big thing. We all know what happened after that. I almost hate that we have A Day because there is so much over the top hyperbole. I did like how the running backs looked. There is no questioning how good that unit will be. I really want to see how Richard Young looks this summer when he arrives.

I just re-watched the first half. After doing so, I will double down that Ty was the better QB that day. At least in terms of decision making and making throws. Milroe does not go through progressions quickly and sometimes at all. Ty did at time have timing issues, but that can be fixed. Looking at one guy and running has been a consistent thing with Jalen and I think it is natural for him because he is so athletic, that his comfort is to just take off. The problem is good defenses wont allow that. He is also abysmal at reading a blitz and reacting.

Does anyone have QB stats from prior A Day performances? Particularly year’s we won the Natty?

Exactly, it’s a glorified scrimmage for the fans. Saban’s out on the field sporting a new suit and the team is just going through the motions to end spring practice.
But it’s a good thing for the fans to get out and support the team, help support the local economy on campus and to go out and enjoy a little football before the long summer break.
But some take this Aday scrimmage way too seriously. Example: Burton needs to transfer because he dropped some passes and looks lazy. But he just had the biggest game of his career against KSU in the bowl game when it mattered. He’s a good receiver and has the potential to have a great yr.
Nobody knows how this team is going to play based off one damn spring scrimmage. But we’ll have a good idea going into the 4th game of the season.

Changing gears…I thought Olaus Alinen looked really good. He is quick and light footed for a big man. If our starters are better than him and Proctor, we are in good shape on the OL.
Posted on 4/24/23 at 10:34 am to Bamafig
He's a really good player. Absolutely gigantic for a kid that should still be in high school. Proctor is the same way. Both of them look like third year players and not 17 year old kids. Caleb Downs and Justice Haynes are college ready studs. I'm ready to see them on the field.
