Five Crimson Tide Players to Watch for in A-Day Game (SI)

While all eyes will be on the quarterback battle, here are some other names to keep an eye on when the Crimson and White teams square off inside Bryant-Denny Stadium this Saturday.

A lot of ppl panicking their asses off about the QBs. To me the statements are essentially based on very limited info and the spring game not having happened yet

Also, if an experienced, talented QB hops into the portal for some reason of course we’ll be interested…along with anyone else that is currently bouncing between a bunch of unproven back ups at the position. It’s more common sense than anything else

I don't insult anyone until they insult me. Check the record.

But, you are acting like Miami's offense didn't change when Cristobal took over and that TVD didn't outplay current NFL QB Kenny Pickett when Lashlee was his OC. Yeah that happened.

It's not just Finebaum saying Bama might be looking for a QB but Rodney Orr alluded to the same before Finebaum. If this results in a transfer QB time will tell.

Exactly.

Grabbing a QB from the portal doesn't automatically mean that Milroe and Simpson are bad QBs, or have been bad in spring camp. As Glorious stated, we have done this in the past when we had Tua and Jalen. Its even more likely to happen now with the transfer portal. I think a lot of us assume that the QB who doesn't win the job will transfer. Why not grab a QB from the portal? Makes perfect sense.

Milroe needs to get a LOT better then or its going to be a long season.

Have you seen him recently?

That's what makes this chicken little stuff so dumb. Spring camp reports regarding Milroe have been positive, and encouraging. Its like people just cannot believe that a young player can possibly get better.

They never do. No matter the position. It’s just worse with a QB.

Big difference with bringing in a guy like TVD, though. He isn't leaving to provide depth...I can promise you that. If he comes to Bama it'll be to start.

I'm not in the business of making predictions based on anything because most of us really don't know what's going on but I feel like it's a safe assumption if we bring in TVD then both guys aren't ready.

Minshew was a completely different situation. He knew coming in that he was just providing depth and it was reported that he wanted to get into coaching and that's why he was headed to Bama...then Leach swooped in with an offer to actually start at Wazzu. Rest is history.

If we go the portal route for a QB that will tell me our current guys aren’t ready. Not that they can’t be ready one day just that they aren’t today. It will honestly be concerning. That said, if Saban hits the portal I expect it will be someone of higher caliber than the Miami kid. I’m sure there are many behind the scenes conversations happening between players and coaches all across the nation. Often by the time a guy hits the portal he already knows where he’s going. They guy we sign, if we do, likely isn’t even in the portal at the moment. And when we do sign him, there will likely be some excitement IF we go that route.

Having to get a QB from the portal is a sign you've failed at recruiting and developing at that position. It's not good.

I think we're just gonna have to get accustomed to rumors that we're casting out a line for a quarterback transfer most offseasons. Could be to fill a need, could be simple due diligence

From the More Sports board:

A little hard to read, so:
quote:

Lot of rumors going around twitter about Miami starting QB Tyler Van Dyke and entering the portal, mainly to transfer to Bama. Appears to have legs as UM mods on their 247 site have stated:

“ We're not going to say too much because we hesitate to discuss players that haven’t announced intentions to hit the portal or until they officially enter the portal, but I just wanted to come on here and confirm that this situation is one they're working through internally and we are monitoring it closely. This is a new age of college football where you have to constantly be recruiting your own roster.

9:45 am Update: I'm of the understanding that Miami's NIL people are meeting with Tyler Van Dyke's representation at some point today. Let's see what comes of it.”

Hate to see it Mario.

If we are going that route, can't we get some rich booster to NIL us Drake Maye? Imagine the offense with that dude running it this year.

Hoping Burroughs pulls a Quinnen Williams and comes out of nowhere to turn into a beast on the inside. That inside pressure combined with the studs we have on the outside would make it very difficult for opposing offenses.

The last rumor coming out of Miami that involved Bama was that Charlie Strong would be returning to Bama with Kevin Steele. Many here initially disputed that. Well, that turned out to be true. I'm starting to think there are some people at Miami that are plugged in more than some here would like to believe.

Also, I've heard that TVD is represented by Drew Rosenhaus and Rosenhaus is the intermediary between the staff (Saban and Rees specifically) and TVD. Just interesting stuff all around and indicative of the new age of college football. I've told those close to me that in this day and age Bama should never have to settle for subpar QB play.

There was a lot of smoke right after the season ended this was attempted. Maye was always going to be an incredibly hard pull from UNC.

I definitely agree on not settling for sub-par QB play. Considering the former QBs in the NFL and our former QB who's about to go #1 overall and has a Heisman trophy to his name.

If our current crop of QB's aren't ready, that's mostly on BoB at this point. That said, if they truly aren't ready, Saban would be nuts to not go grab a veteran QB he feels can help us win a title. With free agency wide open in CFB now, there is NO excuse for not having a good-great QB starting every year at elite programs.

*edit--also remember that grad-transfers are not restricted to the portal windows. I'm guessing there are more than a few veteran QB's who will be getting their degrees in May and can transfer whenever they please.

I have no issue either. USC went out and got Caleb Williams last year. He won the Heisman and they almost made it to the playoff. Might do it this year. Alabama should never settle for anything less than that.
