Mike Leach Has Blunt Message For College Football Players Opting Out Of Bowl Games
© Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports
Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach is letting it be known that he isn’t a fan of players skipping bowl games...
quote:

“You’ve got an obligation to the place that helped build and develop you and finish it out in the bowl,” Leach said, told the Clarion-Ledger.

“That’s part of it. You owe it to your team, you owe it to your fans, you owe it to your coaches and it’s the most bizarre thing in the world to me.”

“Somebody says, ‘Well, I can’t play one more game,’” Leach continued. “They think they’re going to have a storied 10-year NFL career, and then they can’t play one more college game. Well, that’s ridiculous.”
...
“I mean, guys will go to the NFL, they’ll make the Pro Bowl and then they’ll play in the Pro Bowl. It’s one of the biggest absurdities that I’ve seen, and it’s selfish, too.”

I'm pretty sure some coaches did the same thing. nobody owes anything to anybody. It's a business. quit crying coach.

Many times the coaches DO owe the school if they leave. It’s in their contract.

You are correct, it is a business. Thing is, that's exactly the problem, they allowed college football to become a business instead of the amateur sport it was intended to be. There are numerous culprits that led to that but it hardly matters now, the train has left the station and it's not coming back

I agree with him, but why isn’t he saying this about the coaches who leave teams in the middle of the season?

EXACTLY, plenty of BS to go around with coaches and players.

Because of the timing of the signing day.

Unintended consequences. Most everyone likes the early signing day, but that to go along with the transfer stuff, has completely changed college football. Hope I'm wrong because I love it but I think long term this is not a good thing for the game.

Money. Athletes are thinking that they gain nothing from playing an extra game but may risk their health and value. Add to the copycat nature of humans and this is the current situation.

He's right 100% especially if you're not injured.

Leach is right. I don't understand how the love of the game does not compel you to play. The rest of us guys would give our right arm to get on that field.

Right. One of the biggest issues I have with opting out is you took a scholarship opportunity away from someone else. There is a me first mentality that seems to be fully embraced by the media at this point

Would love to play a round of golf with Leach.

What are the odds of a player getting injured in a bowl game? Ten percent? Twenty percent? Very low.

Those are some interesting estimates you came up with.

10 or 20 percent would be very very high when you're talking about risking potentially millions of dollars...

It starts at the top. How about coaches show a commitment to the kids they have developed and coach the bowl game before moving on. If coaches treat it like a "business" it's only a matter of time before the players follow suit. How about everyone enjoy the SPORT, and worry about business after the pads are taken off for the season.

Let player get a piece of the bowl game bonus coaches have in their contracts
