The 12-team College Football Playoff will officially begin this upcoming season, and discussions on expanding beyond twelve teams have already begun.

Last week, reports began to surface of a 14-team playoff starting in 2026, with automatic qualifiers based on conferences.

Now, ESPN's Rece Davis is proposing at 16-team playoff. Per Athlon Sports:
quote:

The proposed larger field will allow for more games to be played on-campus.

“Since we have expanded beyond the very small playoff, I would prefer just going ahead and going to 16, playing the first two rounds on campus, and eliminating conference championship games,” Davis said. “Each of these mega conferences would play a 10-game schedule in-conference and then not required but strongly encouraged to play another power team from the outside. Whether that’s crossover SEC/Big Ten or ACC, Big 12, whatever.”
What's everyone's thoughts?

Just do what the NFL does...that's all this is going to be anyhow...portal, pay, unions, gambling...it's about two steps from who gives a shite right now.

Playing 10 SEC opponents would greatly reduce the prospects of playing a power OOC team, plus the smaller schools need money. I don't like the concept of playing 7-8 SEC teams in the regular season, think 9 is a better number with the SEC expansion.

Bad idea

This is a bad idea. We need to stop devaluing the regular season more and more. Rece probably just wants to make sure Bama always gets in.

Yeah let’s cancel the season and just have everyone play a 128 team double elimination tournament

Hope Rece enjoys the extra bonus check ESPN likely gave him to say this.

Since Rece Davis suggested it, it's automatically a terrible idea.

No, when will our end? Keep increasing to 64-66 like basketball? 12 is already too much.

Now that the gumps will be mediocre again in the next 2 seasons he wants to include them when they start sucking.

Every single level of organized football has a playoff. I don't understand why D1 college football has to make it complicated.

Let's go back to the BCS.

I think that was just the worst. Only opinions from talking heads. Still can't wrap my head around getting in in 2007.

The BCS system picked the right teams in 07. Just look at the final records and look who LSU beat that year. It will surprise you. They were a really good team.

The BCS was not perfect... But it was light years ahead of what was there before ... Just polls...

I’m surprised Rece didn’t propose a 15 team playoff plus Bama.

16 is perfect. Should have been this way from the beginning.

Why stop at 16? Let’s go 20

Pretty soon, everyone is going to get participation trophy.

They let 64 teams in for men’s basketball, and there’s still teams 65, 66, 67 bitching about getting in. There will always be bubble teams. A lot more teams have claim to be the 16th best football team in the country than the 2nd/3rd
