I find it interesting that people on tRant think that IOT be a true fan of a college football team, one must graduate from or atleast attend the school. I never went to UGA, I probably would have been laughed out of the admissions office. I can say that I have loved watching the Bulldogs play football since I can remember, it's a family thing, everyone loves the Dawgs in my family. Why is it negative to be a sidewalk fan? I probably would have given my right arm to go to school there but couldn't so I joined the Marine Corps. Im in school now, but Im not sure if Embry Riddle even has a football team. Thoughts? Looking for the logic behind looking down on soneone for being a sidewalk fan.

Generally speaking... Sidewalk = Fairweather

Not saying that's you, just saying that is the general consensus answer to your question.

Walmart sells alot more shirts when UGA is #1 than when UGA is #24.

I'm not a sidewalker, but I was raised by a sidewalker. I see both sides.

Proud sidewalker here. Been a Dawg as long as I can remember though. Wanted to play football at UGA but I quit growing about 10th grade. I buy my shirts at WalMart and wear them proudly win or lose.

Being one of those hated yankee transplants, from Chicago, who never gave a damn about college football until moving down here, who cares if you went to the school or not?

I used to make fun of college football...the lower level of talent, the number of teams, etc....now that I've lived down here for a good while, frick that, the passion for the Dawgs in this state is just as strong as it is for teams like the Bears and Cubs up in my hometown. Not only the fan passion, but the games! I was so wrong about college ball. Super exciting because ANYTHING can happen. Should you just pretend you don't like great football because you didn't go to college? GTFOH.

I'm technically a sidewalk fan, but was accepted to UGA in 94. Not going to school in Athens is probably one of the biggest regrets in my life, but I was raised as a Dawg fan and came back to the fold after many years in the wilderness as a CFB agnostic.

Never bought a UGA shirt at Walmart, however. I insist on Nike, if I have a say.

This is the way I've always looked at it as well. I would hope most people don't care if you root for a school that you did not attend.

It is the internet. Tough guys behind keyboards try to forget their own problems and misery by throwing shade at strangers.

If you're a fan, be a fan for life and screw 'em.

That said... everyone remembers those kids growing up who were the biggest Bulls, Cowboys, Duke fans. If someone busts chops, that is what they have in their head. A kid flies over o'hare airport and he wears the Cubs gear and wants to act like a lush. Hell... I have a brother who is a Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, Braves fan. He has a reason in his head to cheer for each one. Those people should be shamed.

This... I'm a proud Alum, but who the frick cares in most cases. You're either a decent fan or you're not. Is the quantity of shite fans a little higher for a sidewalk than alum? Sure, but there are shitty alums too... Hell... At least 60% of Auburn grads suck more than the sidewalk fans of any other SEC school. Comport yourself like a decent human and I don't give a frick where you graduated from.

I don't listen to people when they talk that nonsense. In fact, I've known people that are better fans than those that actually attended the school. Not everyone gets the opportunity to attend the school they pull for. I knew I didn't have the grades or been able to afford the out of state tuition even if I did have the grades to go to Georgia. Instead, I went to an small instate school but decided to leave college after my sophomore year to join the military. Yeah...a part of me would love to have that full college experience but I wouldn't change my decision if I could go back. Don't listen to that noise....If you love the Dawgs then you are a fan. Don't let anyone try to define what a true fan is because they don't know you.

I know so many students at UGA who don't care about the Dawgs at all or are just apathetic and only care when we're doing well (as in right now). The way I see it is if you're committed to cheering on the Dawgs no matter what, who am I to question your fandom?

I'd rather have more Dawgs fans so we can pack the frick out of away stadiums more often

I have lived in South Carolina my whole life and people in this state will make your laugh and scratch your head when it comes to college football. First off, you have your die-hard Clemson and Carolina fans. They hate each other and talk all types of shite. Then you have your in between fans. These fans will wear their Clemson or Carolina shirts, talk about who will win, and brag about the game if their team wins. Now, here is the twist. A lot of those same fans will then turn around and say they hope the other team does good in their bowl game or in another big game because it helps make the state look good. The only thing you can do is scratch your head and wonder what in the cornbread hell is going on with these people. There is a lot of these "causal" fans around the state. They couldn't name one player on the team but will sit there and tell you that Clemson is going to whip Carolina's arse this year but hopes they do well in their game against Georgia or some other team they have to play. Same thing with "causal" Carolina fans. I actually had one explain to me last year that they were pulling for Clemson in the playoffs because it would be good for the state to be represented in the national title game. What? I just don't understand it. I know these are "causal" fans but I can't imagine pulling for my rival in any case.

as a grad and fan, i don't hold it against non alums who are fans at all. but most "sidewalk" fans here root for Texas, and 95% of the time they talk the most noise. It's been a quiet few years lately.

That said, I'm not sure I could be a die hard fan of a school I didn't attend. The fact that I spent years of my life on that campus makes me feel connected to A&M in a way that I couldn't for anywhere else. It's not just football, the University is a part of who I am. But that's JMO.

Anyone who thinks the only real fans are alums are the type of people who need a degree to define them as a person because they're insecure about their own self-worth.

Educated beyond their intelligence.

You're a good fan or your a bandwagon fan. I have several UGA alums/attendees in my family/group of friends who care significantly less about Georgia football than some non-alums.

no problems from me with passionate fans - you did not have to matriculate at UGA to love the Dawgs

the negativity about "sidewalkers" is that they are more likely to be of the uneducated, low class variety

working class & poor whites are also the only group left that it is politically correct to ridicule & many "sidewalkers" fit the stereotype

There is always a reason to look down on some group of "lesser" fans.

Alums look down on the sidewalk fans who didn't attend the university.

Donors look down on the regular alums who don't throw money at the Hartman Fund.

We all look down on Georgia Tech.

I have been a UGA football fan for well over 40 years now. One of my most vivid memories is being in my parents' living room on Nov. 8, 1980, at the age of 15, thinking all was lost for the season. Then Belue to Scott happened and I went crazy, jumping around the living room, yelling, screaming and cheering. But, I'd been following the Dawgs before then, tuning in to Munson on the radio cause not every game was televised like it is now. I have and always will love MY Dawgs.

I wound up attending GA State in 1985 after a couple of years of Jr. college. At the time, the degree I stupidly and naively wanted to pursue was not offered at UGA, to my knowledge, it was only GA State and the U of Miami that offered a Commercial Music program. So, I chose GA State. There was no football team then so, my loyalty to the Dawgs remained and still does to this day.

I don't consider myself a sidewalk fan, never have. I was born and raised in the great state of Georgia and the Dawgs have always been my team. Just as God, Larry Munson and Lewis Grizzard intended it to be!

TL;DR: Sidewalk Dawg my arse!

As someone else mentioned, sidewalk fans tend to be more fair weather. I don't care if you are an alum or not, just cheer for the Dawgs, win or lose, and you're alright with me.

Having said that, there is something different about being an alum. Waking the campus every day, sitting in the student section, feeling the hype build throughout the week before the game, walking through the arches after you graduate... It is a different feeling, and one that can't be replicated without attending.

we sound very similar....I would have never gotten in...I farted off in HS chasing tail and didn't make good grades. I joined the Navy...and I am ERAU alum. Keep running down that degree son. ERAU is a good school too. It's ok to not have gone to UGA...I didn't...but I love the school, the town, and the team with extreme passion......win OR lose.

Let it be known that I was also born in Atlanta and have lived in this great state all of my life except for the few years spent in J'ville during my time on AD...I love Georgia...and naturally tFlagship university...it is my fervent hope that at least one of my boys will be able to walk through those arches...hell if I lived close enough, and someday I might...I would start my MBA at the Terry College for Business...but as of right now...that will have to wait.

and GOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!
