Why is it negative to be a sidewalk fan?

When people say Sidewalk fan, they really mean bandwagon fan. A fan that jumps on and off that bandwagon according to how the team does.

I've always thought the disdain for "sidewalk" fans was misplaced. I didn't go to Georgia, either, but my daughter did.

If it were not for sidewalk fans most college football teams would exist at a greatly reduced state.

How do you feel about men who were not in the Marine Corps wearing Marine Corps shirts and hats with an overall presence that would convey to many that they were in fact a Marine and made all the sacrifices that come with being one?

That is a super terrible comparison Peter lol..Just stop

But ya I am an alumni Class of 2004, but I have 100% no problem with non-school attendees rooting for their state's flagship school. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Now I do have a problem with people who could care less most years and they go out and start buying walmart jerseys and act like they have been a fan for a long time. Those people can eat a dick. They are usually the ones running their damn mouths too.

How so? Please expound? Why do you have a problem with a sidewalk Marine? Maybe his Dad was a Marine and he’s loved them his whole life?

I know so many students at UGA who don't care about the Dawgs at all or are just apathetic and only care when we're doing well (as in right now). The way I see it is if you're committed to cheering on the Dawgs no matter what, who am I to question your fandom?

I grew up in a home where my mom was a UGA alum (and had been working on her masters only to give that up when she had me) and my dad never went to college. She was a huge fan; my dad couldn't have given two shits less about football whether we were winning or losing. Didn't matter. His love was flying.

I remember having a bunch of Junkyard Dawgs posters (autographed, of course) from when my mom would take me to the "meet the Dawgs" events. During her undergrad she was also a majorette and was the first to do the fire baton routine.

My sister, 12 years older than myself, did her undergrad and her masters at UGA as well. She is exactly as you describe, Dirty. Doesn't care about football except when we're doing well. Then she'll pay half-assed attention.

Me, well......I'm an alum and love Georgia football and always have. I'm more fairweather about other sports just because I don't have a general interest in the sports themselves, not so much the affiliation with UGA (which is the only reason I care at all).

I have an aunt who is an Auburn alum, but I don't claim her much.

If you're committed to being a fan and you conduct yourself like you've got half a brain (in other words, represent us well), you're good in my book. It's the folks that jump on the bandwagon and start flying the car flags and act like trailer trash at games that grate on my nerves. If that isn't you, you're alright.

Great fans on both sides of the argument but it is different if you graduated from UGA. You lived and breathed all aspects of it.

Yeah...signing up to possibly die for your country is not the same as attending a university.

Anyway, I grew up as a sidewalk fan of another school, couldn't have cared less about UGA athletics. Then when I ended up choosing to attend UGA, I was immediately hooked when I stepped on campus for my first day of classes. I don't look down on Luke Sidewalkers, but I can say the level of pride you feel when UGA sports are doing well is different when you're an alum.

The fact that I spent years of my life on that campus makes me feel connected to A&M in a way that I couldn't for anywhere else. It's not just football, the University is a part of who I am.

Well stated. That pretty much defines what makes college football superior to the NFL and pro sports in general.

So, it’s acceptable to be a sidewalk fan of an organization, unless death is involved? Is that where the line is drawn?

I don't see any difference growing up a uga fan and attending the university.

I kind of have an issue with people who grew up in a different area and became fans when a brother attended the school (specifically thinking of a friend who grew up in Buffalo, his brother went to Florida when he was in elementary school and he attached to Florida because they were winning, and then continued to be a Florida fan while attending UGA... again, Florida was winning).

Married into the fandom? I get it. Born into the fandom? I get it. Someone you know goes there and latching on to the school is kind of lame (assuming you were a college football fan before).

There is the whole slippery slope with the stolen valor thing. As long as you don't wear anything that is uniform related or try to portray yourself as a member of the Marines or any other branch of service then I think it's ok.

I drove 2 1/2 hours every home game to suffer thru the Goff years, been to Jax and watched Spurrier own us way to many times, sat in the rain and watched Bama boat race us, spent the last weekend of my honeymoon watching Dooleys last game, I've earned my stripes. Started going to games when I was 6 or 7 with a friend who's dad played...Im now old as white dog shite.

The Marine comparison would be apre pou if you actually PLAYED for Georgia, where you had given years of your body, sweat, blood and tears to the team.

You're talking about walking to a math class on the same campus the football players happen to attend.

A better comparison would be someone working in the Marine PR or communications department. You're not doing the work of the Marines, but rather are affiliated with them. And no, I see little difference between them and people who support the Marines from the sideline.

By the way, the people who wear Marines shirts (for the most part) have a deep-seeded love for what the Marines do and support them on a philosophical level, much like die-hard Georgia fans.

Nobody gives a shite what school you went to. Get over yourself.

Also, what would happen to Sanford Stadium if all of us deplorable "sidewalkers" got out like we should? You wouldn't get 40,000 people in the gates.

I did play, but don’t think I’m more of a fan than other grads. There’s a good chance I know more about the X/Os and happenings, yet that doesn’t define fandom really.

On the other end of the spectrum, my Cousin went to Parris Island, became a Marine and then proceeded to spend his time in Northern VA as he had language skills that were coveted. He never really risked his life. At least that we are aware of. If he didn’t risk his life, does that count?

The negative aspect of the sidewalk fan label really has more to do with trashy people making a poor representation of a school you worked hard to get into and graduate from... yet, they can put on a hat and a shirt and diminish, so to speak, your University/College/Organization.

To take it even a step further, I have always found it highly comical to see people who never attended UGA and never gave a dime to the school or the AD “Demand” excellence from the program... yet they never made a sacrifice... even if it was just sending $100 to the Hartman fund...

Grew up hating LSU and watching Greene and Pollack destroy people on CBS

Hell I've only been to one UGA game and that was ages ago

Sorry to draw conclusions, but if you played then I guess you can infer that I'm obviously not talking about you. I do hold you in higher regard than Phil the Philosophy major.

I personally know many UGA alums, and most of them are not as diehard about Georgia football as the non-UGA alums I know are.

That's obviously not a blanket rule, but the point is, I judge your fandom by how good a fan you actually are. I don't give a shite about your education.

If you're a bandwagoner or a fairweather fan, I get it. But don't belittle true blue Dawg fans just because they don't have a UGA degree. They're just as responsible for Georgia football's national brand as the alums are.

Agree.

I might not know the name of a building on campus, but I've been a diehard through the good times and bad. (Looking at you Joe Cox and Branden Smith)
