Took a long break in the early 20th century because the rivalry was too intense.

I heard they stopped playing in the forties due to some heated fights in the stands.

That’s how Alabama became such a rival with GTech.

I could be wrong.

There’s been years where the rivalry was too hot to play.

The rivalry has taken a couple of timeouts to let emotions cool down.

And started cheap shotting GTech players. That’s why they left the conference.

They canceled the series for about forty years in a spat that actually began as a disagreement over per diem payments.

Would be less if the state senate hadn't threatened the schools to force it.

Alabama doesn't really benefit from having an in state rival.

Fans were so violent they had to stop. IIRC the Governor had to step in.

There were periods of time where the families involved, well, family, had these psychotic periods of rutting uncontrollably at Thanksgiving. It caused disruption as you can imagine.

Auburn complained a lot. Alabama said fine, we don’t need you.

quote:

During the 1907 state legislature session, a debate surfaced to move the land-grant college from Auburn to Birmingham. Then later in that same session, the legislature approved the first appropriation to Auburn some 35 years after it first opened its doors, for a promised $800,000. The college only received a third of that appropriation, while the University of Alabama remained fully funded through the State Board of Education. The state legislature, still controlled by University of Alabama alumni, still appeared intent on letting Auburn "dry out".[7] Meanwhile, tensions carried over to the football rivalry when, after both 1906 and 1907 contests, Auburn head coach Mike Donahue threatened to cancel the series if Alabama head coach "Doc" Pollard continued employing his elaborate formations and shifts.[8] The series was suspended after the 1907 game. The official reasons being that the schools could not come to agreement over the amount of travel expenses to be paid to players, as well as from where officials for the game should be obtained.[9] It is also reasons that the University of Alabama halted the series in an attempt to further delegitimize the existence of Auburn.>

Auburn wanted $3.50 per diem dke 22 players. Bama was only willing to pay $3.00 to 17 players. And some other garbage about which referee to pick. Legislature threatened to bill funding in the late 1940s, so the schools started playing again

Clayton Bigsby said it very eloquently “No one has sex with my sister but me!” Insert Bama fans for Bigsby. They were big mad about that.
