Will Recruiting Matter in 5 Years?

The portal has transformed CFB insanely fast. I see some coaches ahead of the curve using the portal like NFL trading. I follow recruiting closely. This year and last year Lincoln Riley had small very highly rated classes. Especially this year. I think he’s going to fill the roster the rest of the way with top transfers. Now to some this may seem like oh must be a shitty class. But he’s not even offering other people after early signing. This could end up being the way CFB and recruiting shift. I’m thinking the days of 25+ per class may be over.

It will still matter but coaches jobs just became a lot harder. They have to recruit new players plus recruit players they have on the roster who may be looking elsewhere if they aren't getting enough touches, etc.

you still have to recruit the transfer portal players. So still recruiting.
I also think that Transferring can screw up a players career just as easily as it can make one.

I predict that elite players will continue to transfer through the football portal to elite teams.
I also predict that Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, will be in the final playoff seeding in 2025.

I could see a lot of top Coached just bolting to the NFL. Who wants to try to recruit 18 year olds all off season and then spend all season trying to keep 18 and 19 year olds and talk them into playing in their bowl games or playoff games.

You aren’t finding 15 high quality transfers for one team through the portal so recruiting will always matter.

Isn't getting people from the portal technically recruiting?

It will matter but it may be measured a bit different. Maybe a bit like Baseball. You don't only want to sign players that are potential high round picks because a lot don't even make it to campus. Best college baseball prospect is someone that has development potential.

You'll always get the majority of your talent through recruiting.
There will be the occasional big transfer because a team has too much talent at a position, or such - but that being the equivalent of a 4* or higher will be very rare.
People will point to the hits, but I assure you those will be much rarer than the misses and the never-transfers.

The portal will continue to be important, but you aren't going to build college football teams around the portal.
The portal is like free agency in the NFL and MLB. You use it to patch up areas where your organizational talent/depth isn't what you want it to be, but nobody thinks that you build a championship team around signing free agents.

College football will be dead in 10 years or so. Too little variety/chance in terms of team competition. It’s all stacked on the same 3-4 teams every year. Natty game will be played on ESPNU 10 years from now

without a scholarship limit change, the portal is going to get extremely backlogged and players might realize the portal isn’t the best option.
there’s going to be so many in the portal and very few teams with a scholarship slot available to them

Why do we all act like this is some sort of new phenomena?

Why are you wasting time posting about this here? Quick! Hurry! Someone needs to tell the king about the falling sky!

JUCOs are going to suffer from this the most.
The SEC will become the pipeline to other conferences because of the flood of talent and impatience of kids to redshirt.

Only dumb people do... the rest of us recognize what it has looked like for the vast majority of CFB history. The teams may change periodically, but there are usually a few haves and then some almost haves and a bunch of have nots at any given time.

It’s always going to be best to recruit high school guys and develop them. Transfers should be used to fill holes or you’ll have a team full of guys that will quit on you.

The transfer portal will not exist in a few seasons. Coaches are getting tired of it.
