I have a family member who still bemoans the fact that his stint at Alabama coincided exactly with the Ears years. I don't think he's ever gotten over it.

Ouch. Sandwiched in between Drew and Bryant. That would be like starting with Dubose and finishing up with Kines and missing Stallings and Saban.

The "Perfect Storm"...

1) More money
2) Better staff
3) The fact that he was successful everywhere else
4) Recruits in the South, which now is most rich in talent than any other part of the USA
5) State of Alabama is mainly Pro-Alabama
6) History and tradition of UofA is as good as it gets
7) He didn't have to rebuild Alabama as much as LSU
8) ESPN, and other sports sites, hype Saban and Alabama more than any other college

Alabama could pretty much recruit itself no matter what coach was there. Sure, some coaches brought it down, but they were still on par with Auburn as far as recruiting goes even before Saban was there and Alabama was in their "dark years". They just had bad coaching with those players.

I think it is Bama's cheating ways under Bear that gave them a winning tradition that is greater than LSU's.

That 6-7 record in 2006 suggests otherwise. Did you not watch the Shula years? He had one decent season where the breaks bounced his way until the last two games of the regular season. Outside of that the teams were terrible and his recruiting was pathetic.

UA has always had the "grassroots" support to be a great program, or at least in the modern era of football. It was already well organized before he arrived. At LSU he had to organize it, at UA it was waiting for orders.

UA's greatest advantage is they will get behind any coach as long as he wins.

He's just gotten better at what he does,he's not as conservative on offense and breaks tendencies much more now.The fact he was already known as a national championship coach, and program builder, plus ESPN slurping him all the time doesn't hurt recruiting.

1. He had to kind of build his reputation at LSU. When he came to Alabama, he already had the reputation and clout and had immediate dramatic success in recruiting (thanks in large part to his LSU success). 2. He's become a better coach with experience. 3. Alabama football is more of a brand name than LSU football so it helps any coach that coaches there. Just the facts.

Spot on IMO. Plus, Bama recruits to the edge, and sometimes a little over. Just the facts..they go all out, not a slam, its total commitment.

this was an incredibly important step in the evolution of alabama football in the bcs era and in saban's success in tuscaloosa.

for the first time since coach bryant, the alabama bot and admins were actually willing (b/c they were forced to) to put the football program almost entirely in the hands of the head coach. no micromanaging from donors, board members, the good ol' boy network or from people who considered themselves to be big daddies of the alabama football program.

IF I were a bama fan="its because he is at Bama)

Realistically- most coaches improve as they gain experience

what is the purpose of this thread?

I think having the REC do the "work" has made life alot easier on him to get the recruits he wants.

To date Alabama has verbals from 8 states, LSU has verbals only from LA. & Texas

Meaning what exactly? If LSU gets the Louisiana kids and does well in Houston and Florida occasionally, we will have and have had top 5-8 recruiting classes annually. I guess it sounds good to have verbals from 8 states, but I would honestly rather have most of my guys from 2-3 states because you have the Louisiana pride thing going.

Why? What have they done since leaving Bama? What had they done before coming to Bama?

Yeah, exactly. He's pure shite. But he had the best season of his life as HC here.

maybe because at LSU there were always rumors of him taking an NFL job.

He obviously doesn't have that now.

Plus, like most people, he has probably learned from experiences (LSU, NFL) that have made him a better coach.

He's making Alabama into a monster program with these recruits he's hauling in. Couldn't happen to a less deserving fan base. So it becomes fun to pull against them.

It's amazing what happens when you put the premier coach at the premier football program of the SEC.

Experience level, losing coaches more because they got better jobs not to get away from, and more flexible defense (versus bump and run all out blitzes).
