So, what do you feel are the best indicators of quality line play? I personally think both the offense and defense start at the line of scrimmage. And a subpar line is going to greatly hinder the whole operation. That is why I lean on TDs scored and touchdowns allowed and average yards gained per play and allowed per play as pretty good measures. Yes. Different schemes will impact it, but without the stats like skill players and without grading each lineman on each play it is harder to judge offensive lines. Defensive lines are a little easier, but many really good interior lineman don’t put up gaudy stats, but do stack up double teams, hold the line of scrimmage, plug up lanes and allow the back end of the defense to make plays.

So what do you use to assess line play?

don't think the conference appreciates that SCUs Dylan kid is maybe the next generational talent in conference and he is 18.

It depends entirely on what the scheme is and what the team is trying to accomplish, but generally it’s physicality at the point of attack, which is not so much a talent thing.

For LSU i would say the interior defensive line is lighter on talent but has good physicality at the point of attack. They have gotten beat on plays here and there. But the real run fit issues have been with the linebackers and Star position.

I would say the opposite is true of our interior offensive line, who have some really good football players who are not getting it done for whatever reason in the run game. They’res an argument this unit never truly learned how to run block inside because JD was such a dynamic runner from the quarterback position the last 2 years. I think there is probably some truth to this but it’s also a bit of an excuse and we will see if they are able to improve in that area going forward. Last week we saw a lot more success running Durham on outside zone away from the guards.

Relatedly, another issue for LSU is for whatever reason they continue to run inside zone but with no option for Nuss to pull up and take it himself or even a pass option on the play so opposing defenses are able to really crash down on the runner. Again this is somewhat fair and i have no idea why the LSU coaches won’t alter that play or take it out. Still you should be able to line up and get a yard on 3rd a short i don’t care what the play is.

But neither unit for LSU is absolute worst in the conference or close to it.

State or Gators would be the early favorites.

dont worry, ours is good and Georgia apparently only has 3 defensive lineman who can play. we are going to feast

We should be back to relative health on the DL by game time with 6-7 rotating.

Auburn is not great upfront.

On defense, for some reason, we line up with 3 on the line. I guess we add a fourth sometimes, but the box often looks 3-2ish.

On offense, we still need bodies to compete in this league. I thought we might improve, but I have not seen it as of yet.

But Miss State isn’t giving up many sacks so it’s tough to say if the OL sucks or if it’s just the rest of the offense around them that’s not any good as I haven’t watched them closely.

Our offensive line has been really bad.

You have 3 or 4 DL out due to injury right now? That sounds made up.

I would continue to rush 3 or 2....worked out well in the Iron Bowl.

The Gators and their 2 O line coaches, checking in.

Florida's 440lb nose tackle who can't tie his shoes says, "we got this."

I guess the lineman dropping off had the short middle route covered.

We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory that day.

Hard to tell on us, as we generally are only rushing three people for some unknown reason.

I think Freeze is better HC than Matt Rhule.
