Hornung won it on a ND team that went 2-8.

Wow. That's ridiculous, but I I've read enough to know that Notre Dame used to always get the breaks. For that matter, the media were biased to the northern and midwest teams and pretty often better southern teams were shite on.

The fact that neither Archie, nor Peyton, nor Eli won the Heisman means the Heisman is shite.

Regarding Archie, this is pretty laughable. And yeah, I watched him play. But his ability to scramble glosses over the fact that his passing numbers were, well, pretty shitty by Heisman standards

1969: 154/265, 1762 yards, 58.1%, 9 TDs, 9 INTs
1970: 121/233, 1481 yards, 51.9%, 14 TDs, 14 INTs

By the way...his sophomore season? 8 TDs, 17...that's right, 17...INTs

31 TDs for his career and 40 picks. Never in his career did he have more TDs than picks.

Sure, he could run the ball.

1969: 124 carries, 502 yards, 4.0 YPC, 14 TDs
1970: 80 carries, 113 yards, 1.4 YPC, 6 TDs

Btw...Archie missed a couple of games in 1970 with a broken arm, which hampered him when he returned to the lineup.

So if you're trying to make a case for Archie to win the Heisman, only 1969 could even be remotely considered a Heisman worthy performance.

Steve Owens won the Heisman in 1969.

357 carries, 1523 yards in 10 games, 4.3 YPC, 23 TDs.

Manning was a QB, so you have to factor in his passing numbers, which were pretty blah. He wasn't even remotely the best passer in the SEC. That would have been John Reaves (Fla), probably followed by Scott Hunter (Ala).

Reaves was 222/396, 2896 yards, 56.1%, 24 TDs, 19 INTs.
Hunter was 157/266, 2188 yards, 59.0% 9 TDs, 8 INTs.

Best pure football player I ever saw was Champ Bailey. This was one year after Woodson won the award. Champ was twice the two way player he ever was:

In his final year at Georgia, he registered 52 tackles (four for losses), three interceptions, seven passes deflected, 47 catches for 744 yards (15.8 avg.), five touchdowns, 84 yards rushing on 16 carries, 12 kickoff returns for 261 yards and four punt returns for 49 yards. He averaged 103.5 all-purpose yards per game and logged 957 plays (547 defense, 301 offense, and 109 special teams).
He came in 7th in voting..but he was no doubt the best football player in the country, imo

Hugh Green had an amazing year for Pitt in 1980 and finished his college career with 53 sacks. George Rogers and Herschel Walker had great years, but Green had a better year than both. Green turned out to not even be the best pro-linebacker on that Pitt squad as Rickey Jackson was on the other side. He played Defensive End at Pitt.

Of course the best player to get drafted that year was Lawrence Taylor by a wide margin.

That Pitt team was loaded. Dan Marino, Hugh Green, Rickey Jackson, Russ Grimm, Jimbo Covert, and Mark May. Four of those guys from that team are in the NFL Hall of Fame.

So maybe Green didn't get robbed. He was just freed up to do great things because the team was so loaded.

This. I remember there was a big push after that to try and have the heisman ceremony moved to after the NC game.

To this day if Byars sees Flutie at an event he asks him how his Heisman is doing. That foot injury was a shame. It turned a great running back into a really good fullback who had a long and productive career in the NFL.

Pace was amazing and those pancake commercials were hilarious.

There are many first picks of the draft that did not win the Heisman.

There are also special players who were true difference makers on their teams who did not win the Heisman.

So many defensive players who were overlooked for this award.

Of the Auburn players during my life Tucker Frederickson stands out as a two way player.
Tracy Rocker. Takeo Spikes.

In SEC there are several defensive players who were deserving of more recognition. Derrick Thomas, Lee Roy Jordan, Reggie White, 1992 Alabama defense.

Not in 07. Tebow scored 56 TDs as a true sophomore.

Most overrated stat of all-time. He ran 56 td's in from 1 yard, basically. Fullback playing QB. Wooptiedoo.
