“Congrats on both wins! Yeah, it was a beautiful day. I was working in Nashville and my boss was a State grad so we went up for the game. We were the only two guys wearing maroon sport coats in those UT seats down low about the 40 yd line. My uncle played HS football with Johnny Majors so Johnny knew my dad and his brothers.
Much respect for Johnny. I talked to him about 10 years before he passed, he missed my call trying to get through traffic in Pittsburgh one day. When he called me back, he just kept apologizing for missing my call. Such a gracious and God fearing man.
His book “You Can Go Home Again” is a fantastic read. Some football talk but awesome stories about growing up in Lynchburg. I told him he was one of my fav coaches but that I was a lifelong MSU fan. He said, “That’s all right, Mississippi State is a great school.”
Thank you for sharing.
Johnny Majors was an Assistant Coach at State in 1963. We were four points away from winning the SEC. Tied FL 9-9 and OM 10-10 and lost to Bama 20-19. Finished 4-1-2 in the Conference that year and won Ice (Liberty Bowl) in PHL in 13 degree weather.
Jack Cristil deadpanned that” it was colder than a pawnbroker’s heart” …. LOL.
My Dad always liked Coach Majors and in his book he talks about his time in Starkvegas as being one of his favorite places that he and his wife lived in.
Tennessee treated him horribly and I think karma bit them later because of it.

Appreciate you sharing that because I’m not up to speed on some of the earlier history, so I enjoyed that. I became a State fan as a kid when Peck and Brown were hooping, McDole and Marler were playing over at Scott Field. Senior year of HS I skipped school one Friday and drove the 4.5 hrs down to see Thunder & Lightning play. Great memories.
