1981 when UGA and Oklahoma sued the NCAA over games being televised. Opened up the pandoras box and here we are. Changed the game from a regional affair to a nation wide business.

Mid to late 60's when ALL schools integrated and blacks could play east, west, north and south.

The 60s.
A time when players stopped playing on both sides of the ball.

So you are admitting that none of your past is relevant to modern football?

Footballs inception to 1906 was probably the first era. 1906 saw the introduction of the forward pass and the establishment of the onside kick.
60s is probably when the third began, integration and poll started in 40s, coaches poll started in 50s, and all three were widely accepted by the sixty’s.
4th era is where things get tricky but Id say it began with bcs(forcing of 1 and 2 to play via plus 1 model).
This season kicks off what I think will be the start of the newest era. P2, transfer portal nil, bowls basically won’t matter with 12 team field.

The modern era is when the playoffs started. That's when it became more of an on the field accomplishment instead of a popularity contest via ballot. I would say this because before that, even with the BCS, it was via poll.
It is still via poll, just a smaller sample size.

1965. Changed permanently to two-platoon football and unlimited substitution…

1977 with scholarship limits

Modern is somewhat relative, but mostly marks a generational change. So I’d say it happened when NIL became a thing, but if not, then when Saban retired

You mean like the College Football Playoffs….Poll decided by 12 people
The BCS formula had far more data points than 12 people arbitrarily deciding who the best 4 teams are

2020 with fricked up transfer rules, eligibility, and paying players started the modern era.
Posted on 7/18/24 at 8:53 pm to Dawgfanman
It started in 2000 , really picked up momentum in 2003, went through the roof in 2007 and peaked to an all time high in 2019.

Modern era 1970s. Today’s era, call it what you want, I’ll just say start of BCS era / late 90s.

The SEC wasn't fully integrated until 1972.
Scholarship limits started in 1973 (105, then 95 in 1978, then 85 in 1992).

I would say 1950. That is when the AP and UPI (coaches) polls were both up & going
This is significant. Things also standardized to a small degree around recognizing a national champion at this point- relatively speaking of course because it’s always been a shite show in college football. Prior to 1950, all the claims are mythical at best. After 1950, if a school won one of these two trophies they have a legitimate claim. If they didn’t, they do not. Claiming a title after 1950 while not having won one of these two trophies would be peak clown world.
