A very good coach. Before the vacated wins, he had the highest winning percentage of any LSU coach in the last 100 years. His 77% (114-34) winning percentage was just slightly better than Nick Saban’s 75% (48-16) at LSU.
Based on that, it could be argued that Les was LSU’s best coach ever.

He was the weirdest anomaly. I think LSU made him better than he was. I think he benefitted a lot by what he inherited. He was clearly a good recruiter. I think probably a below average X's and O's coach, but a great manager of staff. A bit too loyal. Was clearly a player's coach from all the things I remember. He knew his role, and i think that was his chief wisdom.

I think he benefited greatly following Saban both from the standpoint of the makeup of the team as well as the booster network that had been established. His downfall was guessing wrong on QB after Mettenberger left. Overall I give him A- for his time in Baton Rouge.

Les was great. He not only had to coach in Saban's shadow, but he also had to directly compete against him in the same division. That was his downfall. 2nd best program for a solid decade, but couldn't even go to the conf championship game or Sugar bowl because the way the conference was designed. It's like those articles about golfers whose career would be way different if Tiger Woods had never been born, but Les was the main guy affected by it.

What's the Rant's opinion of Les Miles as a coach?
An Alabama rematch and a TJ Yeldon screen pass away from being considered one of the all time greats.

Good Coach, far better than Kelly.

It was very telling in 2016 that every other fan base was screaming that we should have kept him.

He was a pretty perfect replacement for Saban, too. Ran a similar style to how Saban played at LSU, was such a unique guy that I'm not sure the "replacing a great coach" thing effected him at all mentally.
But like a lot of other coaches (Tuberville is a good example), once the game in the SEC moved from the 1-back and I-formation and became QB centric, he was unable to win. Just could never figure out how to play the game outside of the conservative offense/great defense/run the ball down their throat and throw play-action style football. He was going to play Bo Schembechler football until he died.
And of course the one year post-2011 in 2013 when they had a really good offense (and my gawd did they with OBJ, Landry, Hill, solid OL)........they were pedestrian defense (#30 YPP).

Honestly, after all of these years I still don't know what the frick he is.
That said I always liked his weird arse when he was at LSU, it was a shame when his reputation was tarnished. 'Weird' isn't so cute when it's mixed with creepy.

Gene Stallings is fair comparison

I'd say he was a a good coach that did everything good...solid B guy. Had the potential to pull a A season out of his hat. Also think his floor was pretty high too.

It was pretty high at LSU. His floor was the floor at Kansas.
Some coaches are built to coach at different kinds of programs.

great recruiter
great motivator
good coach
His area for improvement would be in game adjustments and of course time management.
many universities would be much better with him than not.

Or a failed 4th down away (one of at least 4) against UF from never winning any
It's all a razor thin line in coaching
