When Barkley was on the Dream Team the US was playing Angola and beating them like a rug. As Barkley ran down the court he fired an elbow into an Angolan player. After the game a reporter asked him “Why did you do that?”Barkley answered “How was I to know he wasn’t carrying a spear ?”

Tide's punter graduated and had to be replaced. During spring camp, the frontrunner for the job was repeatedly shanking every punt. Coach Staliings asked, "what the heck is wrong?". The punter (Diehl, I think) said sorry Coach, I guess I'm just nervous with you watching me. Bebes replied, "well son, I plan on being at every game."

That quote is hard to be topped.

"I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last dingdong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance."

Our longtime radio guy Jack Cristil has some great lines. Having to broadcast Mississippi state football for 50+ years builds some character
quote:
The QB and the receiver weren't on the same page there, but hey its only week eleven.
quote:
"It's third down and so long, you will need surveying equipment to see how much is needed for a first down."
quote:
Let's punt it again. McAdams has to punt it a lot in his final game as a Bulldog." "For the record both teams have all of their timeouts left. So, that ought to make it fun."
quote:
About 3 minutes left, many fans have long been gone. In fact, some of them are probably already home by now."
quote:
Chris Relf can throw it long. He cannot throw it accurately, but he can throw it long."
quote:
"It's 4th down and 24 yards to go, this ought to dictate a punt right now". "One can only hope so, Jack." - John Correro
quote:
Sonic drive of the game....My drive home to Tupelo, MS I guarantee you that is my drive of the game." then he procedes to give his home address

Our old bball coach Shelby Metcalf could always fire off zingers:
- upon learning one of his players had four Fs and One D.
"Son, looks to me like you're spending too much time on one subject"
- commenting on ref squads being expanded to 3
"3 blind mice are not any better than 2 blind mice"
- commenting on extremely skinny A&M guard Daryl McDonald
"he's living proof our players don't use steroids"
- On fans
"One day they're naming a street after ya...the next day they're chasing you down it"
- To a reporter who told him he would be covering the games the day after his wedding
"Well, John, if you're cutting your honeymoon short for a basketball game, there's either something I don't know about basketball, or something you don't know about honeymoons."

The week before Florida played FSU in the 1997 BCS National Championship game a reporter asked two Florida guys how they felt about FSU and Miami already having Nattys when Florida didn't have one yet.
Their answer was that neither FSU or Miami had every won an SEC Championship. Believe they said an SEC Championship was probably harder to win. Then they went out and beat FSU 52–20 in that Natty.

Fred Smoot would also tell receivers, "Might as well put your hands in your pockets, cause you ain't going to need them."

I’m going away from my school for this one; it’s a toss up between these 2:
(1) Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes when asked by a reporter why he went for 2 up big late in a rivalry game against Michigan, replied “because they wouldn’t let me go for 3.”
(2) Florida Coach Steve Spurrier, when his QB Terry Dean apologized to him for throwing several interceptions in a game, answers him by saying “It’s not your fault Terry. It’s mine. I recruited you.”
