Team identity is rare because of constant roster turnover so there's less for fans to feel attached to
BUT the number of guys in the game who are given freedom to just create their own shot and can create their own shot has gone way up
as far the SEC goes we are currently in a golden age era of SEC basketball where this year feels a bit down because all our best teams are in the 10-20 range where as last year they were all over the top ten
there is a general sense of give a damn throughout the entire league that frankly didn't exist before........ let's just put Bruce Pearl being hired at Auburn as the Rubicon
women's basketball as an important institution hasn't quite hit the levels throughout the league, but Tennessee and South Carolina are now institutions and schools like State have shown an abilit to compete
I can't tell you how you to feel about style of play but in this part of the world it has literally never been better as far as production being achieved and conference wide resources being poured in

LSU used to make the tournament and go on runs somewhat regularly 20+ years ago so yes!

And the winningest team in the country from 76 to 96 Arkansas.

Was college hoops better 20+ years ago?

If Billy Richmond and Karter could hand check, we’d be lethal.

College Basketball 20 years or so ago was mediocre at best. The best high school players and many fringe guys went straight to the NBA, meaning you did not have the best players in college. The Bama and Mississippi St. teams that were at the top for several years would get boat raced by nearly every team in the current SEC.
Florida capitalized on recruiting 3 star players and keeping them for several years to build cohesion. Those teams would still do damage, but the overwhelming majority of early aught teams would be awful.

CBB was better in the ‘70s & ‘80s when guys had to declare a hardship after their 3rd year to go pro. Today, the NBA skins all the talent off after 1 & throws away what they realize they don’t need.
Alcindor played 4 years for heavens sake, James Worthy & Jordan 3, Magic 2, etc. Today’s teams wouldn’t have a chance.

It’s the men’s fashion that you are focused on in your comparison?

It’s absolutely pathetic.

Let me count the ways and reasons it is bad now. Shot clock is too short. 35 was better and 40’or 45 would be perfect. Transfer portal and constant movement of players. Continuous stoppage to check the monitors. To me…those are the big 3 and the are huge.

Donovan didn't usually land top of class players, but didn't exactly have a roster of 3 star guys either. Believe all of the '04s were top 100 recruits or close to it.

I would think Brewer would have been considered a 5-star recruit, Noah and Horford were probably 4-stars. Definitely considered one of the top freshman classes when they arrived on campus. And that's an era where half the 5 stars probably went straight to the pros.

Yeah, that was a well thought of group that obviously gelled into maybe the single best recruiting class of all time based on accomplishment?

It's up there for groups since the UCLA era. I'd put the Laettner/Hurley class from Duke up there as well, but the Florida guys have obviously done a ton more at the NBA level. '82 UNC was the best collection of talent, but those guys were spread out over a couple of recruiting classes.

Guess I'll be the downvote king in this thread, but today's athletes are better and more skilled than they were 20+ years ago, and in an SEC 2026 vs. SEC 2006 showdown I'm taking the current version all day.
2006 teams would be in an absolute blender trying to guard 2026 teams. The current college 3 point line is the same as FIBA's (22 ft 1.75 in from center of basket). Prior to 2008, the 3 point line was the same as high school currently is (19 ft 9 in from center of basket). This means 2026 teams would be comfortably pouring in 3s from spots on the court that 2006 teams didn't even think about guarding.
2006 national champion Florida's KenPom efficiency rating was 28.28 (#1 in the country). In 2026 a 28.28 rating would put them at #12 in the country, just ahead of Nebraska.
