The SEC has 5 of the top 10 .

Lovie Smith makes 5 million a year ? Illinois forgot the lube on that contract. Frost looks to be way over payed too .

4. Texas A&M - Sure paying dividends with 2 losses before October 1st.

5. Auburn - The guy who has lost back-to-back years to Ed Orgeron?

Keep in mind that he's doing this at Iowa and not at a school where it is traditionally easy to recruit.

Gus is overpaid and his buyout is higher than he deserves. He is paid as a top 5 coach with top 15-20 performance.

He may be overpaid, but I would take Gus over most on that list. Certainly over the 3 I mentioned. Have you ever watched Firentz on the sideline during a game? He will put you to sleep.

Willie Taggart's was insane to begin with and is now looking like a coaching bust.

$21,958,333 Buyout makes FSU a 6 win team for the next 3-5 years

I'll never understand some of these buyouts. Its pure insanity that a coach can significantly under perform and still get awarded 8 figures. I know the schools usually don't have a ton of leverage and I guess it's clearly cheaper than paying out the rest of the contract, but I can't believe a lot of these buyouts aren't contingent on performance.

Man, he looked like he was worth it at first.

The way he turned around San Diego and had them winning a lot of games, then did the same at Stanford, then did the same with the 49ers...

He had not only turned around every team he took over in a short time, but made them highly competitive at the highest levels of their leagues.

Then he showed up early and started recruiting really well and the team his first year looked motivated and well coached, just lacking in talent, which he appeared to be fixing.

Its truly surprising to me how much he has floundered recently.
Agree completely. I'm shocked that they have not been more successful.

IMO, Ferentz gets more grief than he deserves. He has had several very good years and no complete bombs. Even in his off years, he often pulls off a big win. E.g., OSU by 30+ last year, keeping them out of the playoffs. He's doing this at a place that has little in-state talent and where it is difficult to recruit. They are usually a very well-coached team, especially the OL.

Hey, but at least they got their Michigan man.

They are much happier losing with a Michigan man than anyone else!

Schools lose the negotiation battle from the jump. Most of the coaches are represented by one of like two or three agents if I'm not mistaken. Those guys are so much better than the ADs and they essentially make the rules. As soon as one guy gets a high buyout, that becomes the new standard to base from. I doubt many places are going to jump to full guaranteed like aTm but we may see it for now high profile hires... Which admittedly don't happen that often.

At least they weren’t paying Gene Chizik to not coach for several years...
