I see, so that means A&M would have to pay him his full contract amount even if he's fired for cause?

He could quit tomorrow.

It is crazy how much coaches are making now.

Matt Luke makes $3 million a year

Jimbo's payout is $68 million ... that's almost unbelievable.

It really does suck to be so strongly tied to a national championship coach who has our recruiting at #1 in the nation and has drastically improved the team in his first season. Oh, well. Jokes on us, I guess. Even we can't afford to get rid of him now. There go our plans to poach Ed or Will or Chad.

Of course not. Only if he is fired without cause.

Auburn forked up 6.7 mil/yr just so their coach wouldn't leave them for Arkansas

Laugh at Auburn all you want but who the frick would they be able to get who would be better? USC promoted Clay Helton a couple years ago, LSU had to settle for Coach O and Florida State hired Willie Taggart last year and all of those jobs are much more attractive than Auburn. Auburn is one bad hiring decision away from being another Tennessee. I would say they're very lucky to have a coach like Gus.

Then it's not guaranteed, it's a buyout.

I would imagine the Michigan administration folks feel pretty damn foolish whenever they think about how much money they paid Harbaugh. He has been a total bust.

Yeah. Some seem to not understand the difference. He simply doesn't have a buyout. Assuming aTm gets at least 6 years out of him, by that point there is a good chance that salary creep catches up and they didn't end up any worse off. And they got who they wanted. Only time will tell whether it pays off.

This has been my point all along. When Sumlin was extended he was like 2nd or 3rd highest paid, and when we let him go he was fringe top 10. Locking him in for 10 years at that rate may look like a bargain half way thru.

It's not so much of a buyout as it is he's fully guaranteed.

I mean, I get it and all, $75 million guaranteed when he signed, but still ... day um.

If I were him I'd take out a $60 million dollar low interest loan on that money and invest it and double my money, or more (maybe triple it in this market), over the life of the contract.

Harbaugh's salary just proves how pathetic Michigan has become.

Man, he looked like he was worth it at first.

The way he turned around San Diego and had them winning a lot of games, then did the same at Stanford, then did the same with the 49ers...

He had not only turned around every team he took over in a short time, but made them highly competitive at the highest levels of their leagues.

Then he showed up early and started recruiting really well and the team his first year looked motivated and well coached, just lacking in talent, which he appeared to be fixing.

Its truly surprising to me how much he has floundered recently.

The only guys in the top 10 worth the money are Saban, Meyer, and Dabo.

Jim Harbaugh is no doubt the most overrated coach in college football. Paying a shite ton of money to come in 3rd-4th every year in the Big 10.

OTOH, Harbaugh undoubtedly made the right move going back to Michigan. He's making a lot more money and has more job security with lesser results than he would in the NFL. If he had taken a job like the Bears, he probably would have been fired by now and starting over like Chip Kelly is at UCLA.

ComCompare Harbaugh's buyout with Fisher's buyout.

ETA: Hell, compare Fisher's buyout with ANYBODY else's buyout. The next highest one is $30 million less.

I would assume the buyout goes down some each year? No matter what Jimbo is there at least 3 years. Anyone know what his buyout would be if fired after year 3?
