SEC:

Vanderbilt 14
UF 28
UGA 48
Texas AM 68
Auburn 99
UTK 103
Scar 117
Missouri 122
UK 127
Bama 148
Ole Miss 148
Arkansas 162
LSU 172
Miss St 196

LINK

Interesting notes:
- Vandy is the best in the SEC. They were #14 last year as well. They are pretty comparable to an ivy league at this point.
- UF is now tied with UNC, Wake Forest, Tuft and NYU at rank #28. That is pretty incredible. They have rose the rankings in the past few years. Congrats to them.
- Schools such as LSU should be ranked higher without any doubt. Private schools are favored over large state schools by US news methodology.

Its all so silly really though,

Each school has programs that are elite, and some that are crap. Find whichever program you want to do and see how that stands up nationally.

This is the only correct reaction to these rankings.

Great academic schools in our league. UT/OU will strengthen us.

The UT classes on proper pronoun usage and public dildo parties are going to send our academic ratings through the roof

Can we stop posting the stupid US News rankings every year

20% of it is what peers think of your university
5% “social mobility”
Etc

And I just don't test well! You know that thing that demonstrates my knowledge and ability I just do a bad job with that! But I totally get the material.

Spot on, especially for the large flagship schools. For most undergrads, their experience at a school like Mizzou will be almost no different than their experience at say Texas or Kentucky. All of those schools have a whole lot to offer if you are willing to take some initiative, but those big schools are not going to hold your hand, especially through the first couple years. You can make that experience what you want, unless you are targeting a specific degree program.

For the vast majority of 18-year old kids heading off to college who will not have any realistic idea about what they want to do, the focus should be on things like location, cost, job placement, and graduation rate. Most of the other factors being weighed are nonsense when considering the average student.

From the last thread...

quote:

Every school teaches the same thing, meaning schools are about jobs. There are maybe 10 schools that will impress companies nation-wide (none of them in the SEC)- these schools can get you a job anywhere. Outside of that, (1) it depends entirely on specialized fields (engineering at TAMU, journalism at Mizzou, etc.) and (2) where you're looking for a job. Graduating from UC Irvine will impress exactly 0 people in Birmingham but graduating from UA will.

ETA: Wages came up as a big factor in the Forbes list (which had all UC schools in the top 40). Forbes list ended up being more like a cost of living analysis based on where graduates work

Mississippi State's failure in these rankings is not so much an indictment of the school as it is an indictment of the public school systems, across the state.

4 and 6-year graduation rates are a big piece of these rankings and the average Mississippi HS graduate is sorely underprepared for college and many do not have the support to stay and finish their degrees once they hit the inevitable bump in the road.

USNWR rankings are not academic rankings, many schools play their system as well.

Texas A&M (and UT as well) have slipped a bit in the U.S. News rankings in the past decade or so, mostly because they have expanded incoming class sizes (at least A&M has) by giving more opportunities to kids who are first in their family to attend college. Overall, though, A&M has only gotten better academically over the last 20 years-- not only by strengthening its core strengths (engineering, ag) even more but also by getting into law and spending more on medical/allied health programs. I believe A&M's name brand has only gotten bigger and better over the years...and with far more (and more diverse) alumni from which to fundraise, the football and athletics generally should be just fine going ahead.

You ever heard that world report has Deans at every college answer those, and they always just put schools they know at the top and schools of deans they are friends with?

Listened to a whole podcast about how the ratings were all bullshite.

Ole Miss and State not being able to set their own entrance requirements is a joke. Not sure if State is the same but when I was at OM the first 2-3 semesters were made to be a little more difficult to weed out the students (of all races) that had no business being there. I had someone in my Comp 1 class ask the professor what a thesis statement was. That's 7th grade shite.

This release is pretty significant for UF. Hit top 5 public status for the first time, a long time goal of the university. Going to get a ton of press here, alums can expect their inboxes to be flooded.
