Auburn is just a long way from Texas otherwise it would get a lot more, very similar in culture to A&M as a Land Grant school. It's 10 hours plus from Houston and worse from Dallas or Austin and it's not easy to fly into.

My son gets stuff from State, LSU, UK, UT, Bama, Auburn, Arky, and OU all the time. By comparison the only thing we get from A&M is letters wanting money from me or my wife as alumni. Nothing from Texas either. Plenty from all the other smaller state schools in Texas and the private schools. They just want all those Texas HS students and their parents money I guess but A&M and Texas seem like they wish fewer would apply so they didn't have to take so many.

One of the top schools in the Country. The OP was questioning their ranking.

What ARE the scholarship numbers for UT and A&M ? What % of the student body is on some type of academic scholarship ?

They have moved to a model that is very means tested. Essentially if your family makes less than $60k tuition is free. They are trying to move that up to $100k. If you are above the line though it's very hard to get scholarships, you have to have serious academics to qualify generally. Personally I hate the system, I would rather they make it a bit more balanced and lower the cost for everyone who is in state, I sure AF pay my taxes and A&M gets my donations.

I believe the number for A&M officially is 55% are on some type of scholarship.

High School counselors? They barely know about their own schools. This is not true at all. Same quality of in-state students as out-of-state students.

bullshite. Many of Bama's instate students are enrolled under conditional enrollment due to GPAs or ACTs. They also do not include those numbers that they report to these rankings. Ask a HS Counselor.

If you use the same ranking group that the OP has, Mississippi is now 43rd. That would be ahead of South Carolina, Alabama, and Louisiana. Mississippi has made some strides in K-12 education the past 10 years.

The new usual bottom feeder New Mexico.

I think the lists are bullshite, but for Alabama it is also an indication to some future problems. With 60% of the student body being from out of State, they are having to take some marginal students from inside the State. They are getting some pushback from the citizens/politicians of the State over these numbers and are offering those marginal students some money to keep the numbers at least tolerable. It is unsustainable and it is going to force the Administration to choose size or quality.

UA OOS Students quadruple, skew white and wealthy

“For instance, based on the data that we collected, the University of Alabama only visited about a third of public high schools in their own state and largely ignored high schools with the highest share of African-American students in the Black Belt," he said.

Even after controlling the study for school size, price and number of students that passed statewide exams, “the University of Alabama was one of the few that showed significant racial bias,” Jacquette said.

Yep, nothings change with backwards racist UA. Wish my black brothers and sisters wake up and realize UA only wants you if you can do something athletically for them
